At this time, many chrysanthemum gardens in Long Son village, Tan Dan commune (Duc Tho district, Ha Tinh province ) are overflowing with vibrant yellow flowers, preparing to supply the Tet market for the Year of the Dragon 2024.

This is the fifth year that Tran Thuy's family has grown chrysanthemums to sell during Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year).

Ms. Tran Thuy's family (Long Son village, Tan Dan commune) has one sao (approximately 1000 square meters) of land dedicated to growing chrysanthemums. This is the fifth year her family has grown this flower for the Lunar New Year. Ms. Thuy said: "Previously, this entire area was planted with oranges, but the trees deteriorated, so I switched to growing chrysanthemums for the Lunar New Year. This year, I planted 10,000 plants, and during the recent Lunar New Year, I earned over 5 million VND, with the rest reserved for the Tet market. Each Lunar New Year flower season, after deducting expenses, my family earns a profit of about 30 million VND."

This year the weather has been quite favorable, so the chrysanthemums have bloomed evenly, beautifully, and with large flowers.

As Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches, Ms. Thuy becomes even more cautious in caring for her flowers, constantly monitoring them to detect and promptly treat any pests and diseases that may harm her garden. According to Ms. Thuy, this year's weather is quite favorable, the chrysanthemums are growing well, blooming evenly and beautifully, so they are likely to fetch a good price this Tet season.

After much hard work and diligent care, the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham (Long Son village, Tan Dan commune) can now breathe a sigh of relief as their entire 300 flower garden (20,000 plants) is thriving.

Ms. Tham said: "After 4 months of planting and caring for them, the flower garden produces very beautiful, large, and uniform flowers. To extend the harvest, we spread it out into two batches; some will be sold during the Lunar New Year, and the other will be sold during the Lantern Festival in January. Currently, the wholesale price at the garden is 5,000 VND per plant."

For this year's Lunar New Year flower season, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham's family planted 20,000 chrysanthemum plants.

For flower-growing households like Ms. Thuy's and Ms. Tham's, the Lunar New Year is the most important and anticipated season of the year. The entire Long Son village has 100 households growing flowers, with the smallest farms having at least 1,000 plants, and larger farms having 15,000 to 20,000 plants. Chrysanthemum planting begins around the 9th lunar month, and by the 15th day of the 12th lunar month, farmers are already harvesting.

The farmers of Long Son village are overjoyed as this year's Tet flower crop has yielded both a bountiful harvest and good prices.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Vinh, Vice Chairman of the Tan Dan Commune Farmers' Association, said: "In the last 5 years or so, more and more farmers in Long Son village have switched to growing chrysanthemums, especially during the Lunar New Year season. At this time, households are starting to harvest and sell their produce to markets and distributors in the province. To support the farmers, the association has guided them in applying scientific and technological advancements to cultivation so that the plants grow well and bloom at the right time for Tet, while also connecting them to promote their products, create outlets, and ensure stable prices."
