Gena Rowlands in the movie The Notebook

A Woman Under the Influence delves into the struggles American women face in their lives and social relationships. When the Cassavetes couldn't raise enough money to produce the film, they mortgaged their home and borrowed from family and friends to make it happen.

Her son, director and actor Nick Cassavetes, once shared with Entertainment Weekly about her role in The Notebook, released in 2004: "I asked Mom to play an older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer's. Now she has Alzheimer's. Ironically, we have to live with this disease when she had previously played someone with Alzheimer's."

Gena Rowlands starred in the Broadway play Middle of the Night alongside Edward G. Robinson in 1956. She later starred in the 26-episode television series Top Secret and made guest appearances in numerous other television shows. Her first feature film was The High Cost of Living (1958).

Rowlands and Cassavetes worked together on 10 films, including *Faces*, *A Woman Under the Influence*, and *Gloria*. She married Cassavetes in 1954 and they lived together until his death on February 3, 1989.
