The Notebook star Gena Rowlands dies

Actress Gena Rowlands retired in 2015 after winning four Emmys, two Golden Globes, and two Oscar nominations for Best Actress in a Leading Role for A Woman Under the Influence and Gloria. Both were directed by her husband, John Cassavetes. The couple made an indelible mark on American independent film.

A Woman Under the Influence delves into the struggles American women face in life and relationships. When the Cassavetes couldn't raise enough money to produce the film, they mortgaged their home and borrowed money from family and friends to make it happen.

Her son, director and actor Nick Cassavetes, told Entertainment Weekly about her role in The Notebook, which was released in 2004: "I asked my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer's. Now she has Alzheimer's. It's ironic that we have to live with it when she played someone with Alzheimer's."

Gena Rowlands starred in the Broadway play Middle of the Night opposite Edward G. Robinson in 1956. She then starred in the 26-episode television series Top Secret and guest-starred in several other television series. Her first film appearance was The High Cost of Living (1958).

Rowlands and Cassavetes made 10 films together, such as Faces, A Woman Under The Influence, Gloria... She married Cassavetes in 1954, living together until his death on February 3, 1989.
