While fireworks displays were previously judged primarily on their scale and number of effects, at DIFF 2026, the deciding factor in their appeal lies in the technical execution. Fireworks are now designed as digital works of art, where technology, music , and visual language are programmed to tell a complete story.
The theme "Creativity" at this year's DIFF was realized by the competing teams through their own unique approaches, showcasing the strong transformation of fireworks art in the technological era.
For the Macau (China) team, creativity is built on a foundation of research and technical innovation. At DIFF 2026, the team presented numerous effects, most notably a new generation of water fireworks along with a range of modern display technologies. These innovations not only enriched the language of light but also expanded the expressive possibilities of fireworks, transforming each performance into a surprising experiment.
Meanwhile, the German team chose a more artistic approach, with the creative concept being a journey beyond the limitations of traditional fireworks to transform the sky into a giant canvas.
Despite their different approaches, both the Macau (China) and German teams incorporated technology to serve art, and art was elevated by technical breakthroughs. This combination resulted in multi-sensory performances, where light, music, and creativity blended together to create unforgettable moments in the skies over Da Nang .
Meanwhile, in the "Heritage" themed competition, the Z121 Vietnam team mastered 3D fireworks simulation technology. All effects were designed and verified graphically before the actual performance, allowing for precise calculations of firing timing, altitude, angle, color, and coordination with music. This technology minimizes errors while expanding the designer's creative possibilities, transforming the sky into a meticulously staged performance space.
“Thanks to our direct manufacturing process, we have a thorough understanding of the characteristics of each type of fireworks. We have all the effects that are currently used worldwide . In 2026, we invested in additional equipment and technology to simulate fireworks in 3D, thereby verifying the effects graphically before the actual performance to achieve the best results,” said Colonel Tran Anh Manh, Team Leader of Z121 Vina Pyrotech at DIFF 2026.

The modern trend in fireworks displays is also reflected in how competing teams build their own "fireworks language" instead of just creating visual effects. With the theme "Heritage," the French team used multicolored titanium tail flares, falling leaf effects, and glitter waterfalls to create multiple layers of overlapping images, evoking cultural heritage. The multi-layered, controlled firing technique ensured that each burst of fireworks was not separate but linked together into a rich, cinematic narrative.
Meanwhile, the Japanese team, with the theme "Culture," opted for a minimalist style using single fireworks and the characteristic Nishiki Kamuro effect. The slow-burning golden fireworks, falling gently like silk ribbons across the sky, demonstrated that modern performance techniques don't necessarily rely on a dense array of fireworks. Controlling the burning speed, the duration of the light, and the rhythm of each firework created emotionally rich moments, deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetic philosophy.
Team captain Naganuma Keisuke shared that the Japanese team used layers of fireworks launched from the water's surface. In particular, at the end of the performance, they used "Kaburo/Kamuro" fireworks, which, when launched into the sky, created streaks of golden light that gently fell back down. This effect is often used to conclude fireworks displays in Japan, creating an iconic image representing the identity of the Land of the Rising Sun.
Meanwhile, the Italian team capitalized on the strengths of multi-layered effects and the near-perfect synchronization between music and light. Each sequence was designed like a film scene with clear climaxes, transitions, and endings. Electronic control technology ensured that each firework exploded with precision down to the fraction of a second, making the sound and visuals blend into a unified whole.
From a technical perspective, modern fireworks displays are shifting from a "fireworks display" mindset to a "show design" mindset. 3D simulation software, digital control systems, music synchronization technology, multi-layered effects techniques, and AI platforms for the audience are transforming the entire value chain of fireworks festivals.
Therefore, DIFF 2026 is not just a competition in terms of the number or scale of fireworks, but also a place where technology becomes a creative medium, allowing light, music, and emotion to blend together, transforming each performance into a contemporary work of art in the sky.
