Pig farmers are delighted with the high prices after a period of struggling with production costs.

Pork prices have risen sharply.

Currently, live pig prices in Hai Phong range from 78,000 to 80,000 VND/kg. This is also the highest price in many months, a positive sign for the pig farming industry, especially in the context of high feed costs and the continued risk of African swine fever recurrence.

For farmers and livestock businesses, the increase in pork prices is also a positive sign after a long period of having to bear the burden of feed costs and disease prevention and control, and even at times having to cover production losses. This creates favorable conditions for the stable development of livestock farming in the future.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Hung's farm in Dong village (Nguyen Luong Bang commune) currently maintains a scale of 80 breeding sows and about 700 fattening pigs. According to Mr. Hung, in November 2025, the price of live pigs fluctuated between 45,000 and 50,000 VND/kg, causing many livestock farmers to break even or suffer losses, especially those who had to buy piglets from outside. With the current price of live pigs, for farmers who can proactively source their own piglets and manage feed costs well, the economic efficiency is even more evident.

Many large-scale livestock businesses are also benefiting from the positive market developments. Mr. Nguyen Dac Viem, representative of Hung Huy Livestock Breeding and Equipment Joint Stock Company (Cam Giang commune), said that the company is currently raising about 4,000 pigs, supplying 700-1,000 pigs to the market each month, mainly serving the markets in the northern provinces. For this year's Lunar New Year, the company plans to sell about 500 pigs.

Mr. Pham Xuan Hung's farm (Tien Lang commune) currently maintains about 500 pigs for meat production. Recently, he sold 100 pigs and expects to sell nearly 50 more in the coming days to meet consumer demand during Tet (Lunar New Year). According to Mr. Hung, with the current price of live pigs, if households can produce their own piglets, each pig weighing about 100 kg will yield a profit of 2.5 to over 3 million VND.

Therefore, the commune is gradually developing economic models that are well-suited to its natural environment and market demands. These range from raising goats, deer for antlers, and French pigeons to developing forest-based economic activities and processing forest products. These new production approaches are creating jobs, increasing income, and boosting economic value compared to traditional production models.

According to many farm owners, the main reason for the high price of live pigs is the impact of African swine fever in several provinces and cities. The disease has made many farmers hesitant to restock their herds, leaving many farms empty, leading to a decrease in the supply of live pigs while market demand, especially during the Lunar New Year holiday, tends to increase sharply.

Currently, pork consumption is favorable. Some farmers predict that pork prices will remain stable or increase slightly between now and the Lunar New Year due to the lack of improvement in supply and the increased demand during the holiday season.

The increase in live pig prices has also led to a rise in retail pork prices at local markets in the city. Currently, pork loin is priced from 115,000 - 120,000 VND/kg; pork belly and shoulder from 145,000 - 160,000 VND/kg; and pork ribs from 165,000 - 170,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 15,000 - 25,000 VND/kg compared to November 2025.

The price of live pigs at local markets in the city has increased by 15,000 - 25,000 VND/kg compared to November 2025.

According to a report by the Department of Fisheries, Livestock and Veterinary Medicine (Department of Agriculture and Environment), in January 2026, the total pig population in Hai Phong city was estimated at approximately 512,100 head, an increase of 0.78% compared to the same period in 2025. The output of live pigs for slaughter reached nearly 23,000 tons, an increase of 2.1% compared to last year.

Alongside the positive signs, the authorities also advise livestock farmers to be cautious when restocking or expanding production scale to avoid risks when the market fluctuates.

Mr. Le Van Tung, Head of the Livestock Department (Department of Fisheries, Livestock and Veterinary Medicine), said: “Livestock farmers need to base their decisions on market demand and disease control capabilities before deciding to restock. Small-scale farmers should avoid chasing prices and restocking indiscriminately, which can easily lead to supply-demand imbalances and the risk of losses when pork prices fall again.”

The relevant authorities recommend that when restocking, livestock farmers should choose breeding stock with clear origins and that have undergone full quarantine; administer vaccinations according to regulations; and enhance hygiene, disinfection, and sterilization of barns to ensure biosecurity in livestock farming. Linking product consumption and participating in livestock-consumption chains are also considered important solutions to reduce risks and improve economic efficiency.
