Mr. Nguyen Hoa Phong began donating blood in 2004 when the Red Cross Society of Chau Thanh District, Tay Ninh Province (formerly) organized a blood donation drive. Mr. Phong shared: “Previously, whenever I was sick, I only took medicine because I was very afraid of needles. The first time I donated blood, I had to close my eyes tightly to lessen the fear; I was a little worried when I got home, but after a few days I felt fine. Since then, I have donated blood every year, 83 times to date. The doctor shared that my blood type is 0- (0 Rh-), which is rare and important, and can be transfused to all other blood types in emergency situations. Every time I donate blood and save someone's life, I feel very happy.”
To this day, Mr. Phong still remembers the time he donated blood for an emergency at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City at the end of 2015. The victim was a man who had been in a serious traffic accident and lost a lot of blood, but no one had a compatible blood type (blood type O-). Knowing that Mr. Phong regularly participated in voluntary blood donation, the hospital contacted him to ask for his help.
Mr. Phong recounted: “It was around 9 a.m., I was working as a construction laborer near my house when I received a phone call informing me of an emergency. I immediately went home to prepare and caught the ambulance from the hospital. Fortunately, the victim received timely emergency care and blood transfusions, so they overcame the critical condition and gradually recovered. Afterwards, the victim's family came to see me to thank me and offered gifts, but I firmly refused. I think anyone in that situation would choose to save someone. Because human life is the most important thing.”

To maintain his health and participate in blood donation, Mr. Nguyen Hoa Phong always maintains a healthy lifestyle, diligently exercises, and pays attention to a balanced diet. Mr. Nguyen Van Man (born in 1971), a neighbor of Mr. Phong's family, said: "Mr. Phong is a farmer, and in his free time he often works as a construction laborer to improve his life. He is very kind, cheerful, and always willing to help others. He also eats very healthily with the hope of being able to participate in blood donation for the long term."
Not only does he regularly donate blood to save lives, but as a member of the Executive Committee of the Blood Donation Club in the Southeast region, Mr. Nguyen Hoa Phong also actively encourages friends and people to participate in blood donation. He has even encouraged his wife and children to join him. His wife has donated blood 5 times, his two sons, Nguyen Hoang Phu and Nguyen Hoang Tuoi, have donated 6 and 7 times respectively. Notably, both of Mr. Phong's sons have blood type O-.
According to Nguyen Thanh Cuong, Chairman of the Chau Thanh Commune Red Cross Society: “Mr. Nguyen Hoa Phong is one of the outstanding examples in the locality in the humanitarian blood donation movement. He was honored to receive Certificates of Commendation from the People's Committee of Tay Ninh Province (formerly) for his achievements in participating in voluntary blood donation many times. In 2016, Mr. Phong was also sent to Hanoi to present his exemplary case, and was honored to receive the Ho Chi Minh Badge awarded by the Prime Minister and a Commemorative Medal from the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society.”
