Apple is entering its most significant leadership transition since Tim Cook replaced Steve Jobs in 2011. As Cook approaches his 65th birthday, many internal sources and observers believe John Ternus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, is becoming the strongest candidate for the future CEO position.

This assessment is reinforced by a new report from Bloomberg author Mark Gurman, who has closely followed Apple's operations for many years and often cites highly accurate internal sources.

Tim Cook's successor

Attention on Ternus increased significantly after Jeff Williams, a senior executive once considered Tim Cook's successor, unexpectedly announced his departure from Apple at the end of this year. Williams' withdrawal from the race has made Ternus the most likely choice, especially given his deep technical background and experience managing Apple's entire hardware portfolio.

Joining the company in 2001 as a mechanical engineer on the product design team, Ternus has been involved in developing most of Apple's flagship devices for over two decades. His mark is evident in every generation of iPad, new iPhone models, AirPods, and especially the transition of Macs to silicon chips.

In recent years, Ternus has appeared more frequently at major events, playing a key role in introducing big products such as the 2019 Mac Pro, the 2018 iPad Pro, new iMac models, and the iPhone Air.

According to Gurman, Apple's communications team has begun "focusing attention on Ternus," a move analysts see as a signal of preparation for a power transition. Although not holding the top executive position, Ternus has been deeply involved in product direction, feature selection, and strategic decisions that are typically handled by senior executives.

At 50, Ternus is considered young enough to assume the CEO position long-term, a level of maturity comparable to Cook's age when he took over Apple in 2011. This aligns with the board's desire for long-term stability, especially as Apple is aggressively investing in new areas like AI and mixed reality.

Apple's move is the right one.

During his 20 years at Apple, Ternus rose steadily through the ranks. He was appointed Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013, overseeing AirPods, Macs, and iPads, before expanding to iPhones in 2020. When Dan Riccio stepped down as CEO in 2021, Ternus was promoted to Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, a position he currently holds.

Gurman said Ternus's presence at recent product launches reflects his growing power in shaping product categories. He even stepped in to replace CEO Tim Cook in leading customers at the iPhone 17 launch event at the Regent Street store in London in October.

The succession process is unfolding at a time when Apple is facing a significant rotation of senior personnel. According to Bloomberg , several key leaders, such as AI strategy chief John Giannandrea, hardware technology chief Johny Srouji, and environmental policy chief Lisa Jackson, are all considering their futures. For a company known for its stability under Cook's leadership, this is a sensitive time.

Meanwhile, Tim Cook is sending mixed signals. He once said on CNBC that it's hard to imagine himself "doing nothing," but Bloomberg sources say the Apple CEO may move into a chairman role when the time is right, similar to the model of Jeff Bezos at Amazon or Bill Gates at Microsoft.

The fact that Ternus is being considered as a successor shows that Apple continues to place its trust in internal staff, individuals who have grown within the company's own engineering culture.
