Report on the culinary business market in Vietnam in 2023 by iPOS, a business providing management solutions for restaurants and coffee shops, reveals the spending habits of Vietnamese people in the food and beverage (F&B) segment. ).
The results were compiled by surveying nearly 3.000 restaurants, eateries and nearly 4.000 consumers across the country.
There are people who go out to drink coffee every day
The survey shows that despite the impact of the economic recession and consumers tightening their wallets, nearly 60% of respondents are still willing to spend 41.000 VND or more for a coffee trip in 1.
This rate continues to grow slightly compared to 2022 and is a surprising factor in a difficult economic year like 2023. The most common spending level is 41.000-70.000 VND, accounting for about 45%.
For high-end coffee shops costing 70.000 VND or more, the number remains almost the same, accounting for more than 14%.
Among those surveyed, 42,6% choose to go to coffee 1-2 times a month. Meanwhile, the proportion of diners going out for coffee 1-2 times a week increased from nearly 23% in 2022 to more than 30%.
Notably, up to 6% of Vietnamese people participating in the survey admitted to going out to coffee shops every day. This group of customers often comes to coffee shops for work meetings, or students and freelancers.

People who are dating tend to go to coffee shops more often, mostly 1-2 times a week. On the contrary, single people and families usually only go out to coffee shops 1-2 times a month.
Young people like to eat outside
In addition to the above demand, the report said Vietnamese people tend to eat out more often. According to survey results, more than 17% of diners eat out every day. Meanwhile, another 29% of people admitted to eating out 3-4 times a week, this number increased sharply compared to nearly 18% in the 2022 survey.
Despite economic difficulties, spending on F&B services still increased significantly. 77% of diners plan to maintain or even increase their spending on food in 2023.
When going out to eat on special occasions, people surveyed said they are willing to spend heavily and distribute it quite evenly with prices ranging from 100.000 VND to 1 million VND. Specifically, the most popular price is 200.000-300.000 VND, accounting for nearly 28%.
Unmarried people will have a higher frequency of eating out. Accordingly, the single and dating groups have a frequency of eating out every day of nearly 18% and 19%, respectively. For married diners, this number is lower, at nearly 14%.
In terms of gender, the rate of men eating out every day is 21% while this figure for women is 14%. This demonstrates the difference in eating habits between the sexes.
Men tend to eat out more often because of living habits, busy work, convenience or gathering with friends. Meanwhile, women often spend more time cooking at home, due to concerns about health, nutrition and food safety for themselves and their families.

According to data from market research organization Euromonitor, the market value of Vietnam's F&B industry this year is expected to increase by 10,92% compared to 2023. Notably, in the past year, 80% of businesses reported good business results. Business health is restored and there are enough resources to develop in the near future.
Of the 2.255 responding units with good business conditions, more than 51,7% of food and beverage stores plan to expand their scale. However, there are still nearly 33,5% of units that do not have this need. Some reasons suggest that businesses are satisfied with the current business situation, or are concerned about potential risks when expanding.
