Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei said that the company's Ascend chips are still about a generation behind US AI chips, but can achieve comparable performance.

In a front-page interview published on June 10 in the People's Daily, Ren Zhengfei stated that by using methods such as stacking and clustering (cluster computing), the computing results of the Ascend chip, Huawei's latest AI chip line, can be equivalent to the world's most advanced programs, according to SCMP .

This is the first time the founder of Huawei has spoken about the impact of US sanctions in about three years. This statement reflects the view that Washington has been unable to curb China's technological progress, especially in the field of artificial intelligence.

He stated that China has many advantages in developing AI, including "hundreds of millions of young workers" along with "abundant power resources and a developed information network."

"China's power generation capacity and grid transmission system are excellent, and its telecommunications network is one of the most developed in the world," Ren Zhengfei stated.

The interview was published amid increasing restrictions on China by Washington, with Huawei becoming a focal point. In May, the US Commerce Department issued new guidance stating that the use of Ascend chips “anywhere in the world” could be considered a violation of US export control regulations.

Ren Zhengfei also emphasized that Huawei is just one of many chip companies in China. “There are many chip companies in China, and many are doing very well,” he said. “Huawei is just one of them. The US has exaggerated Huawei’s achievements.”

"In terms of individual chips, our chips are still a generation behind those in the US," he said. "But we can use mathematical methods to compensate for physical limitations and use cluster computing to compensate for the single chip limitations. As a result, the computing performance can still be achieved in practice."
