In a front-page interview published on June 10 in the People's Daily, Ren Zhengfei said that by using methods such as stacking and cluster computing, the computing results of the Ascend chip, Huawei's latest AI chip line, can be on par with the world's most advanced programs, according to SCMP .
This is the first time the Huawei founder has spoken out about the impact of US sanctions in the past three years. The comment reflects the view that Washington has failed to curb China's technological advancement, especially in the field of artificial intelligence.
China has many advantages in developing AI, he said, including “hundreds of millions of young people” along with “abundant electricity and developed information networks.”
“China's power generation capacity and power grid transmission system are very good, and China's telecommunications network is one of the most developed in the world,” Ren Zhengfei commented.

The interview comes as Washington ramps up restrictions on China, with Huawei in the spotlight. In May, the US Commerce Department issued new guidance stating that using Ascend chips “anywhere in the world” could be considered a violation of US export controls.
Ren Zhengfei also stressed that Huawei is just one of many chip companies in China. “There are many chip companies in China, and many are doing very well,” he said. “Huawei is just one of them. The US has exaggerated Huawei’s achievements.”
“In terms of single-chip products, our chips are still a generation behind the US,” he said. “But we can use mathematical methods to compensate for the physical limitations and use clustered computing to compensate for the single-chip. As a result, the computing results can still achieve practical efficiency.”
