Mark Zuckerberg was not present at the meeting with White House officials on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI). On May 5th, the Biden administration met with CEOs of technology companies that are at the forefront of AI innovation, including OpenAI, Alphabet, Anthropic, and Microsoft.
Speaking to CNN , a White House official said Meta was not invited.
"Thursday's meeting focused on businesses that are leading the sector, particularly in the consumer products aspect," the official revealed.
The AI race has been heating up for the past few months, starting with OpenAI's launch of the ChatGPT chatbot in November 2022. Google responded with the Bard AI chatbot in February. While Meta has accelerated its AI development, the lack of AI products for consumers has diminished the company's presence.
Earlier this year, Meta introduced the Large Language Model (LLaMA) to researchers. It's similar to the GPT-4 model that underpins ChatGPT. Zuckerberg is said to have overinvested in AI, causing some analysts to worry about the level of spending on this technology. Facebook's parent company buys a lot of Nvidia chips to train its generative AI models. Each chip can cost up to $10,000.
The battle for dominance in AI has also raised concerns among authorities about the technology's potential risks. The White House said President Biden stopped by the meeting to remind attending CEOs of their "fundamental responsibility to ensure products are safe and secure before they are deployed or made available to the public."
