Vietnamese music 'cries for help'

Given the increasing popularity of AI-powered music and its accompanying negative consequences, many artists have spoken out, urging audiences to stop supporting products created by artificial intelligence.

The controversy surrounding VSTRA's song "Kiss Me Here" not only sparked debate about the rights to use derivative works but also raised concerns about the growing impact of AI technology on the Vietnamese music market.

Simultaneously, Tlinh, K-ICM, and Ngo Lan Huong all spoke out about the increasing number of songs created using AI appearing on social media and at music and cultural events. According to the artists, this is an alarming situation.

The artists spoke out one after another.

In a statement published on the evening of June 7th, VSTRA stated that her concern lies not only in the licensing of a specific work, but also in the risk of AI-generated music appearing and being exploited without a clear legal basis. According to the singer, this could affect copyright, the public's experience, and the reputation of artists and related entities.

VSTRA's reason for speaking out is that during the K-Pulse Hanoi 2026 concert on the evening of June 6th, the organizers used a remix version of "Kiss Me Here" combined with AI-generated music in Jay Park's impromptu performance. Immediately after the show, the use of this version sparked debate on social media.

Subsequently, the event organizers issued an apology, admitting their oversight in failing to verify and research the music track and not contacting VSTRA before using it.

VSTRA's concerns are also issues that many Vietnamese artists have been paying attention to recently. As artificial intelligence tools increasingly become capable of simulating vocals and creating new music in a short amount of time, many artists have expressed worries about the risk of their images, voices, or works being exploited without permission.

Around the same time, Tlinh spoke out on social media, urging fans to report if they discovered any individuals or organizations using her music to create AI versions. The female rapper argued that the rapid development of technology is posing a major challenge to those in creative professions.

Meanwhile, K-ICM also expressed dissatisfaction upon witnessing a recently held music festival that largely used music created using AI. According to the producer, this somewhat diminishes the value of the creative process and the role of the artist in music events.

Ngo Lan Huong also faced a similar situation when her song " Co Cong Mai Sac" (With Hard Work, You Can Sharpen Your Skills) unexpectedly went viral on social media through a version using AI vocals.

Although the song's popularity has helped it reach a wider audience, the singer stated that she disagrees with AI versions using artificial voices, or even mispronouncing the lyrics.

"Please stop listening to AI music. Currently, the AI version of 'Có công mài sac' (Having Work Hard to Sharpen Your Skills) is going viral. I'm truly grateful for everyone's love and support in spreading the song. However, using AI vocals, even singing the wrong lyrics, is unacceptable. The AI version has been removed from most platforms, and will be replaced by the afro version performed by Ngo Lan Huong herself," Ngo Lan Huong said.

From the VSTRA incident to the cases faced by Tlinh, K-ICM, and Ngo Lan Huong, the story of AI in music is becoming a widely discussed topic. Alongside the opportunities that technology brings to creative activities, many opinions suggest that artificial intelligence is being misused and distorted, leading to infringements on the rights of artists, musicians, and producers, and directly threatening their work.

AI is becoming distorted.

Speaking with Tri Thức - Znews , musician Sỹ Luân stated that AI is an inevitable trend in the music market. It saves costs, speeds up production, and accurately captures user preferences.

As for how audiences receive AI music, that depends on each person's aesthetic taste. AI may diversify and enrich choices, bringing new things to listeners. Audiences will benefit from new technologies. However, from the perspective of musicians and singers, they are facing a difficult situation. This requires them to constantly update their knowledge and technology to increase their output, shorten production time, improve quality, and generate better ideas.

According to the musician, AI is a tool that helps artists optimize their production and generate more creative ideas, but it shouldn't be abused or become the dominant force in their work.

Meanwhile, producer K-ICM shared that using AI to assist in the creative process isn't inherently bad, but the overuse of AI in all music events causes unnecessary misunderstandings. The AI-generated music, without rigorous quality control, results in off-key singing, forced pitches, and incorrect rhythm. This reduces the artistic quality of the programs, diminishing the unique character of the products, especially in the realm of traditional culture and ethnic elements.

With music that reflects cultural and ethnic influences, AI cannot accurately reproduce the timbres of traditional instruments or singing styles. This distorts the listener's experience. Most AI-generated music products feature stiff, emotionless singing.

“In the initial phase, the development of AI will significantly impact the music market. While a traditional song goes through many stages from composition, arrangement, mixing & mastering, now a song can be created with just a few commands. AI music is like short films or short content; it will be popular for a while, then it will cool down, and audiences will return to traditional music because listeners can feel what real music is like. But currently, it cannot be denied that AI products are still listened to by many people, especially AI-generated covers. This will reduce the revenue of original songs at the moment, as less discerning audiences will think that AI sings better than the original,” K-ICM said.

Regarding the suggestion that event organizers use AI music to save costs and avoid copyright issues, K-ICM responded: “Cost savings are possible. But it's really not a good idea. While it might save costs, it reduces the overall quality of the program. As for avoiding copyright, that's incorrect, because AI cover versions are all based on the original song. Therefore, regardless of which version is created using AI, copyright fees must still be calculated based on the original song.”
