My first impression, besides the fresh air and cool breeze caressing my skin, was the familiar sounds all around me. First, there was the booming sound of the local radio station, broadcasting regularly every morning from 5:30 to 6:00. I sometimes listened, sometimes not; often, while doing my morning exercises, I didn't even know what the station was broadcasting. But the gentle murmur in my ears for the first 30 minutes of the day had become dear and familiar.
Then came the sounds of vendors hawking their wares past the house, offering everything from sticky rice, corn, sweet soup, bread, knife sharpening, locksmith services… to the blaring noises of engines and car horns as I stepped onto the street, officially joining the flow of urban traffic.
Perhaps those sounds just kept echoing in my ears, becoming so familiar that they almost seemed to disappear. Sometimes, while driving on the road, amidst that deafening noise, a gentle melody would softly resonate within me. I would hum a favorite song, relaxing from deep within myself.
There were times when the excessive noise of car engines, the loud conversations on the phones of passersby right next to me, and the sudden honking of horns startled me, interrupting my train of thought and making me uncomfortable. But amidst all that annoyance, sometimes I felt a great sense of relief: that was when I unexpectedly heard a thank you.
It could be the sweet, gentle "Thank you, sir" whispered by a young boy on an electric bike as a taxi driver slows down to let him turn left into the school gate. It could be the hurried thank you when someone quickly passes another vehicle on the road, reminding them to put up the kickstand, remember to turn off the turn signal, or adjust their long dress to prevent it from getting caught in the wheels… It could be the thank you I hear on the roadside when someone stops to help another tie up a shifted shipment, tightening it securely so the other person can continue their journey with peace of mind. Or simply a thank you at the grocery store after a sale, a thank you over the phone, a thank you when someone asks about your work, or inquires about the health of someone at home…
I particularly love the sound of thank-yous. It's like refreshing drops of water gently falling amidst the hustle and bustle of traffic. I often gather around me words of thanks, stories of gratitude, and I frequently nod and thank people when they proactively yield the right of way to me, demonstrating a beautiful and civilized aspect of traffic behavior.
For me, the most wonderful sound of the day is always a thank you, because I know that around it, there is always a shining example of a good deed, a genuine act of kindness and consideration, and a heart full of love!
