On the afternoon of June 26th, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tri, General Director of CII Infrastructure Services Co., Ltd., the unit currently collecting road service fees at the Hanoi Highway BOT toll station, officially provided information regarding the incident where a car damaged the BOT toll station's barrier and was ordered to pay 200 million VND in compensation.
According to Mr. Tri, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon (June 23rd), when a ride-hailing car was traveling on Hanoi Highway, following a container truck. When passing the toll booth, the car had two Etag cards. The automated toll collection system at the booth could only read one card matching the current license plate, but it did not have enough credit. Therefore, when the vehicle passed, the barrier lowered and pressed down on the car's roof.
"Immediately afterwards, the staff on duty at the toll station came down to check. Normally, when handling an incident, the staff will assess the damage and identify the fault to create a report. This incident did not cause any damage; the tension mainly arose from the statements made by the staff on duty at the toll station. Perhaps they were too hot-headed and made inappropriate remarks...", Mr. Tri said.
Mr. Tri informed that, after some time, both sides resolved the matter amicably, with no compensation involved. The driver then drove away from the toll station. Currently, the company's leadership has requested the shift on duty on June 26th to prepare a report explaining the incident.
"We will take disciplinary action to the highest degree. The company's policy is to avoid inappropriate language at work," the company's CEO emphasized.
As reported by VietNamNet, on the morning of June 26th, an over 8-minute-long video clip circulating on Facebook titled "The barrier at the Hanoi Highway toll station costs 200 million VND" attracted many shares and comments.
Accordingly, the incident occurred at the Hanoi Highway toll station in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City. At the beginning of the clip, a person believed to be an employee of the Hanoi Highway toll station demands 200 million VND in compensation from a ride-hailing driver for damaging the barrier.
The male ride-hailing driver explained that he only passed when the automatic barrier lifted, and that he still had money in his account (ETC account). "I only passed when the barrier opened. This is your fault," the driver said.
In response, several people, supposedly station employees, explained: "The transaction history shows whether the money was deducted when you passed through the station. Did you see another license plate displayed? The fault lies with your lack of observation…"
The two sides continued to exchange loud words for more than 8 minutes, causing chaos in the toll booth area.
