The Japanese government has decided to increase visa fees for foreigners fivefold starting in July, marking the first adjustment since 1978.
The Japanese government approved this amendment at a recent Cabinet meeting. According to NHK, the fee for a single-entry visa will increase from the current 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, equivalent to approximately 93 USD.
The visa fee for multiple entries within a specified period will be raised from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen, equivalent to approximately 186 USD.
Speaking to reporters, Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu said the current visa fee was set in 1978 and is being reviewed this time to address rising prices and exchange rate fluctuations.
He stated that the decision was made after considering various impacts and other factors, and that the revisions would not have an immediate effect on the number of tourists visiting Japan.
