The patient was ordered to undergo parasite testing and allergy antibody testing. The results showed that the patient tested positive for dog and cat roundworms (Toxocara spp.).
Upon receiving the test results, the doctors held a consultation and concluded that the raised mark on the patient's hand was caused by the migration of dog and cat roundworm larvae under the skin.
According to the patient's medical history, he is a farmer and owns eight animals, including three dogs and five cats.
Following intensive treatment, the patient's itching completely disappeared, and the rash on their hand healed completely. The patient was discharged in stable condition and scheduled for a follow-up appointment in one month to re-test for dog and cat roundworm antibodies. If the antibodies are still present, the doctors will assess the level of decrease to decide whether to continue treatment to completely eliminate the parasites from the body, in order to avoid dangerous complications.
Dr. Vu Minh Dien, Deputy Head of the Department of General Internal Medicine, stated: Roundworms in dogs and cats are a common parasite. They can infect humans through the digestive tract. When humans come into contact with soil or water contaminated with roundworm eggs from dog or cat feces, the eggs can enter the body through the mouth and develop into larvae. These larvae migrate through body tissues, causing various symptoms, most commonly itching, bumps, and rashes on the skin.
Dr. Dien added that the rate of roundworm infection in dogs and cats in the community is currently very high, especially in areas where many people keep dogs and cats as pets. Previously, dogs and cats were only kept for guarding homes or hunting rats, but now they have become common pets, increasing the risk of parasitic worm infections in humans. People with positive antibodies and symptoms such as itching and rashes should immediately go to reputable medical facilities for testing and timely treatment.
"Early detection and treatment of roundworm infections in dogs and cats are crucial, because if left untreated, the parasites can cause many serious complications, affecting long-term health. Besides treatment, preventive measures such as regular deworming for dogs and cats and maintaining personal hygiene are necessary to minimize the risk of infection," Dr. Dien emphasized.
Being infected with dog or cat roundworms causes itching all over the body.
