According to the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority, booking rates on domestic routes during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday are increasing rapidly.
Booking rates have increased significantly.
Accordingly, during the holiday period (January 21-28), the booking rate on flights from Ho Chi Minh City to other localities is increasing rapidly and is nearly full. Some routes have reached over 90-100% booking rate, such as flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue, Pleiku, Tuy Hoa, Quy Nhon, Buon Ma Thuot, Quang Binh, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Chu Lai, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang, Hue, and the Hanoi - Buon Ma Thuot flight.Flight booking rates for the Lunar New Year period in 2025 are gradually increasing, with many routes already sold out.
Many routes have already sold out of economy class tickets.
Data from a ticket price survey shows that during the Lunar New Year holiday of the Year of the Snake (2015), in the period leading up to the holiday, airfares for many routes from Ho Chi Minh City to other provinces were listed at high levels by airlines, with many routes even sold out in economy class. Specifically, on January 22nd (the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month), the basic economy class fare for routes such as Ho Chi Minh City - Vinh, Ho Chi Minh City - Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City - Thanh Hoa, or major routes like Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi, was listed by airlines at around 2.9 million VND. Meanwhile, on January 25th (the first day of the holiday), many routes such as Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City - Hue, Ho Chi Minh City - Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City - Thanh Hoa, and Ho Chi Minh City - Vinh were completely sold out. However, due to the high demand for travel back to hometowns for Tet (Lunar New Year) in the northern provinces, airlines have had to operate many empty flights from the northern and central provinces back to Ho Chi Minh City. As a result, ticket prices in the opposite direction from provinces such as Buon Ma Thuot, Hue, Thanh Hoa, Pleiku, Dong Hoi, Chu Lai… to Ho Chi Minh City are showing a clear contrasting trend. On January 22nd, 25th, and 27th, on these routes, both Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air listed significantly lower prices, starting from only 90,000 VND. Notably, on flights from Hai Phong, Vinh, and Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietjet Air offered promotional fares from as low as 0 VND. Bamboo Airways and Vietravel Airlines also offered attractive fares, starting from only 25,000 VND on routes from Da Nang and Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Unlike flights to/from Ho Chi Minh City, in the period before Tet, on tourist routes such as Hanoi - Da Nang, Hanoi - Quy Nhon, Hanoi - Phu Quoc, round-trip airfares were recorded as not significantly different, fluctuating only from about 1 to 3 million VND depending on the route. However, on January 25th, on some routes such as Hanoi - Quy Nhon, Hanoi - Phu Quoc… some airlines reported that economy class tickets were sold out. After the holiday, when people started returning to work, airfares from the northern and central provinces to Ho Chi Minh City reversed. On February 2nd, the end of the holiday, sold-out tickets were recorded on many routes from Buon Ma Thuot, Hue, Nha Trang, Thanh Hoa, Pleiku, Dong Hoi, Vinh, Chu Lai… to Ho Chi Minh City. On the same day, on flights from tourist destinations such as Quy Nhon, Phu Quoc… back to Hanoi, some airlines had sold out of tickets. On February 8th, the first weekend after the holiday, airfares continued to show a skewed trend, with flights from Ho Chi Minh City to provinces such as Da Nang, Pleiku, Vinh, and Hanoi being listed by airlines as low as 0 VND, while return flights remained at high prices. Currently, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has directed the airports of Tho Xuan, Dong Hoi, Chu Lai, Phu Cat, Pleiku, and Tuy Hoa to implement 24/7 operation plans to ensure that the demand for night flights from airlines is met. To meet and ensure the connection between road and air transport, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has sent a document to the People's Committees of provinces and cities requesting support in implementing solutions to serve the 2025 Tet holiday. At the same time, it requested the People's Committees of provinces and cities to direct relevant departments and agencies, and transport service providers such as taxis and ride-hailing services to increase operating hours, the number of vehicles, and the frequency of buses to serve passengers, especially those on night flights to and from airports. The CAAV stated that it will continue to request Vietnamese airlines to study and consider adding flights on routes currently full from Ho Chi Minh City to provinces in the North and Central regions on days leading up to Tet, based on operational capacity, airport infrastructure, and ensuring safety and security.
