The US dollar fell to a three-month low on Tuesday as concerns about slowing growth and the impact of tariffs on the U.S. economy outweighed any potential boost from increased tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.
President Donald Trump's new 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada took effect, along with a doubling of tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%, at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time (0501 GMT).
In response, China announced it would impose additional tariffs of 10-15% on certain imports from the United States starting March 10. Canada said its retaliatory tariffs against the United States would take effect on Tuesday, and Mexico is expected to follow suit.
Concerns about trade conflicts and their impact on other countries' economies could boost the USD, but recent weak economic data has put pressure on the currency and US bond yields.
Concerns about import tariffs dominated comments from manufacturers in Monday's weak survey by the Institute for Supply Management, continuing a series of gloomy data.
The US dollar index, which tracks the currency against six others, fell 0.54% to 105.96, its lowest level since December.
Chris Turner, global market director at ING, said: "While the U.S. is now expanding its tariff regime to Canada and Mexico, weak domestic U.S. activity... is preventing the dollar from appreciating following the tariff news."
Investors flocked to traditional safe-haven currencies like the Japanese yen and the Swiss franc, both of which rose nearly 1%, as concerns about growth and tariffs sent global stocks plummeting on Tuesday.
The Canadian dollar rose about 0.45% to 1.4471 against the US dollar, after touching a one-month low of 1.4542 late Monday as tariffs were confirmed.
The Mexican peso recently fell by about 0.3% to 20.76 pesos per dollar, after earlier touching its lowest level since February 3rd.
Analysts say many in the market are hoping tariffs could be quickly lifted if an agreement can be reached, just as the initial threat of tariffs on Canada and Mexico was halted in February.
Lee Hardman, senior currency analyst at Japanese bank MUFG, said: "The initial depreciation of the Canadian dollar and Mexican peso was relatively modest given the scale of the tariffs already imposed. The price volatility suggests that market participants still hope the tariff increases will not be prolonged, thereby limiting disruption to trade and the economy."
