Fresh seafood
Busy from dusk until late at night, Mr. Le Van Lanh, a skilled fisherman in Trung Chanh village, Loc Dien commune, caught more than 10kg of shrimp and fish from Cau Hai lagoon. After midnight, having unloaded the fish from the boat, he carefully tied the baskets of shrimp and fish onto his vehicle and hurried to the market. At the appointed time, the fish market lit up.
Mr. Lanh happily said, "Thanks to this midnight fish market, fishermen like me have an easier time. We don't have to worry about waiting until dawn to bring our catch to the market; as soon as we catch fish, the shrimp and fish are quickly bought, and I can go home and rest early after a tiring day of fishing."
Having been established for nearly 30 years, the midnight fish market is not only a gathering place for fishermen like Mr. Lanh and not just in Loc Dien, but also for many fishermen along the Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon system. Mr. Mai Dinh Tuan, a member of the market management board, said: “The Loc Dien midnight fish market covers an area of about 300 square meters. It is a hub for buying and selling various types of seafood, both farmed and caught by fishermen from the communes of Loc Dien, Vinh Hien, Vinh Hung, Giang Hai, as well as neighboring areas in Phu Vang district and Huong Thuy town. Besides supplying fresh seafood locally, it is also a wholesale market providing fish and shrimp to many traders with refrigerated trucks for resale in other districts and Da Nang .”
Ms. Ho Thiet, a long-time fish vendor at the market, said: “Loc Dien night market has very fresh and diverse seafood, from wild fish and shrimp to farmed seafood. Therefore, seafood originating from this market is highly sought after in the morning markets. For more than 10 years, thanks to this market, I have been able to trade and wholesale and retail shrimp and fish to various places, thus having a stable income to support my family.”
Motivation is needed.
The Loc Dien fish market is open from 1 to 3 AM. It's a bustling hub of buying and selling activity, with an average of over 200 fishermen and traders from various places gathering there each morning. The stalls display a wide variety of attractive local seafood specialties. Besides wholesale, the market also sells seafood at reasonable prices. Therefore, it attracts not only locals and traders but also diners who appreciate the specialties of the riverine region.
Visiting the market to buy shrimp and fish for his family, Mr. Nguyen Van Truong (An Cuu ward, Thuan Hoa district) said: “I had the opportunity to visit Loc Dien night fish market. Here, the seafood is abundant, diverse, fresh, and reasonably priced, so I am very excited. Exploring the market and joining in the buying and selling activities of the fishermen is an extremely interesting experience.”
As a market closely linked to the livelihoods of many fishermen and traders in the region, in addition to ensuring security and order, maintaining environmental hygiene is extremely important to ensure that buying and selling activities do not affect the surrounding residential area. According to Mr. Tuan, the market has been planned to be opened in a spacious area, with more convenient transportation and to avoid environmental pollution and impact on the residential area. "Currently, the market management board is making every effort to minimize pollution and increase the efficiency of the market's operations. Hopefully, in the near future, the Loc Dien midnight fish market will receive timely attention and renovation so that fishermen and traders can buy and sell with peace of mind," Mr. Tuan said.
