The ships venture out into the open sea.

Regarding the sea areas in the last days of March, we observed a bustling atmosphere as fishermen set sail to harvest seafood. From the docks and fishing ports, we watched the images of fishermen's boats venturing out to the open sea, not simply to catch seafood, but also to affirm the sovereignty of our homeland's seas and islands.

At Ca Na fishing port (Thuan Nam district), we observed a bustling atmosphere as fishermen prepared for long fishing trips, busily loading fuel and provisions onto their boats, ready to set sail for fishing. Fisherman Nguyen Van Minh, from Lac Son 1 village, Ca Na commune, said that this is the end of the fishing season for gourami, and the weather at sea is quite favorable. His family's two fishing boats, specializing in purse seine fishing, yield over 40-50 baskets of various fish per trip, earning tens of millions of dong in profit. Mr. Minh shared: "Previously, my family mainly fished near the shore. Although the catch was high, the economic value wasn't high, so the income wasn't stable. With the policy supporting fishermen to fish in distant waters, my family invested in building two large-capacity boats, each with over 700 horsepower, and equipped them with modern equipment to venture out to the Truong Sa and DK1 areas to fish." Thanks to favorable fishing grounds, both fishing vessels have yielded abundant and valuable seafood, providing the family with a stable annual income of over 1 billion VND.

The province currently has 1,996 fishing vessels with a length of 6 meters or more; of which, 634 are between 6 and 12 meters; 440 are between 12 and 15 meters; and 892 are 15 meters or longer. To help fishermen in the province venture out to sea to catch seafood and assert sovereignty at sea, the fisheries sector has focused on encouraging fishermen to modify and upgrade their vessels; organizing training courses for hundreds of fishermen in the province to improve their skills and provide them with the necessary legal conditions for fishing; encouraging fishermen to apply scientific and technological advancements and equip themselves with modern equipment to venture out to sea to catch seafood; and encouraging fishermen to replicate effective fishing models that combine seafood exploitation with expanded processing and logistics services, aiming to develop the fisheries sector along the value chain in seafood exploitation and processing. Furthermore, we are promoting and encouraging fishermen to participate in fishing in distant waters; strengthening forecasting and providing fishing ground information to fishermen; establishing solidarity fishing teams at sea to support and share information; and encouraging eligible fishing vessel owners to participate in fishing activities combined with protecting the sovereignty of the nation's seas and islands. In addition, through government development support programs, our province has focused on building infrastructure for the Ca Na, Dong Hai, Ninh Chu, and My Tan fishing ports, forming fishing centers and storm shelters that largely meet the production and consumption needs of fishermen. This contributes to improving fishing efficiency and affirming the sovereignty of the nation's seas and islands.

To improve the income of fishermen in coastal areas, in addition to support policies from the central and provincial governments, the agricultural sector has implemented many groundbreaking solutions, opening up new opportunities for the strong development of the marine economy. Among these, the policy supporting fishermen exploiting distant waters, as stipulated in Decision No. 48/2010/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister, has yielded clear results by promptly addressing difficulties and providing fishermen with additional funds to repair and upgrade their fishing vessels to increase catch yields. Fisherman Trinh Van Ly, from Lac Nghiep 1 village, Ca Na commune, stated: "In recent years, thanks to the timely attention and support from the Party, the State, and local authorities, including fuel subsidies under Government Decision No. 48 for fishermen with large-capacity fishing vessels participating in offshore fishing, it has created motivation for each fisherman to invest in larger vessels, determined to stay at sea, venture further offshore, and affirm the sovereignty of the Fatherland's seas and islands."

Thanks to the increasingly developed capacity of fishing vessels and supportive government policies, the annual seafood catch of fishermen in the province has increased significantly. In 2024 alone, the province's total catch reached over 132,641 tons of various seafood.

Comrade Nguyen Kim Long, Head of the Marine and Fisheries Sub-Department (Department of Agriculture and Environment), said: In the coming time, the unit will strengthen its presence in the area, regularly monitor the fishing situation, and promptly provide information on fishing grounds so that fishermen can plan the movement of their fishing vessels for rational and efficient fishing; proactively coordinate with coastal localities to encourage fishermen to participate in fishing in distant waters and establish production solidarity groups and teams at sea, linking fishing with the protection of maritime sovereignty and security. Along with that, solutions will be developed to upgrade fishing vessels, improve fishing gear, and transfer modern maritime equipment applications into fishing, aiming for sustainable and long-term fisheries development.

Seeing the ships sailing out to sea to harvest seafood, flying the national flag, not only inspires and motivates fishermen to continue venturing out to sea and clinging to the ocean with the hope that the resources from the sea will sustain and enrich the people in coastal areas, but also affirms the most solid "living landmarks" on the sea and islands of Vietnam.
