Give to revive life.
After each blood donation, the blood donation app on the phone of Nguyen Minh Ngoc, 28, a worker at Youngone Nam Dinh Co., Ltd. ( Ninh Binh province), starts counting down to the next time he can donate blood. The increasing number of blood donations means he has contributed to saving more patients in need of blood.
Mr. Ngoc shared that with the blood donation software from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, he can register, track his history, search for blood donation locations, look up test results, and monitor the journey of his blood units. This helps his "red journey" to be continuous and sustainable.
Ngoc recounted that his blood donation journey began when he was a second-year student at Hanoi University of Industry. With the enthusiasm of a student, he donated 350ml of blood. After his first donation, he felt incredibly uplifted and excited. Recognizing that promoting blood donation was a meaningful and engaging activity, Ngoc proactively joined the Industrial Blood Donation Team A of the 1/12 Youth Blood Donation Movement in Hanoi. From there, while studying, he also arranged his time to participate with the team in promoting and encouraging blood donation.
Mr. Ngoc said that his team often provides support at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. There, he witnessed many difficult situations faced by patients, especially children. The high demand for blood transfusions, particularly during Tet (Lunar New Year) and summer, means that the insufficient blood supply directly threatens the lives of patients. He understands that promoting blood donation is the only way to build up blood reserves and save patients from critical situations.
Approximately once every three months, Mr. Ngoc donates blood. He donates anywhere, anytime his body allows. Alongside donating blood, he actively encourages his friends and those around him to volunteer for blood donation. “Blood donation is the simplest thing anyone can do. For a healthy person, one unit of blood can quickly regenerate, while for someone in need, that unit can revive a life,” Mr. Ngoc shared.
After graduating, Mr. Ngoc returned to his hometown in Nam Dinh ward and worked at Youngone Nam Dinh Co., Ltd. While working, he managed his time effectively to volunteer at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion to donate blood. Later, he joined the Nam Dinh Red Cross Volunteer Team, both donating blood and participating in promoting, mobilizing, and supporting blood donation drives in the province.
Over the past 10 years, Mr. Ngoc has donated blood 38 times. The more he participates in this movement, the more he realizes that many young people share his mindset and have creative and enthusiastic ways of contributing to the community. This motivates him to strive harder, further develop the responsibility of the younger generation to society, and strongly spread this movement to the community. In 2025, Nguyen Minh Ngoc will be honored as one of the 100 outstanding voluntary blood donors nationwide.
Promoting the culture of blood donation in the community.
With 36 whole blood donations and 15 platelet donations, Vu Manh Linh, Team Leader of the Nam Dinh Red Cross Volunteer Team (Ninh Binh province), is considered an inspiring figure in Ninh Binh's voluntary blood donation movement.
According to Linh, in 2010, while a student at Nam Dinh Textile and Garment Industry College, he donated blood for the first time and has since become involved in this movement. On average, he donates blood 3-4 times a year and has registered to become an emergency blood donation volunteer.
Linh recalled that one winter evening in 2015, he unexpectedly received a phone call from Nam Dinh General Hospital informing him of a critical case urgently needing a B+ blood transfusion. Without hesitation, he immediately went to the hospital to donate blood. A few days later, he was informed by the hospital that, thanks to the timely emergency blood transfusion, the patient had overcome the critical condition. “From then on, I realized that saving lives is not just about doctors; we can also save lives by donating blood. This is the simplest thing we can do anytime, anywhere,” Linh shared.
Besides donating whole blood, he is also actively donating platelets. Mr. Linh explained that while whole blood donation only takes about 15 minutes, platelet donation takes approximately 60-100 minutes per donation. The donor's blood is directly fed into a blood cell separation machine. This machine separates the platelets, placing them in storage bags, while the remaining blood components are returned to the body. Platelet donations are spaced about one month apart. Donating platelets only removes one blood component, and people can donate multiple times without affecting their health.
In 2016, Vu Manh Linh joined and was entrusted with the position of Team Leader of the Nam Dinh Red Cross Volunteer Team. Recognizing the public's hesitation towards voluntary blood donation, and in his role as a "leader," he and the volunteers flexibly and creatively employed effective methods of promotion and mobilization, such as distributing leaflets, conducting awareness campaigns in public places, encouraging participation, and monitoring blood donation awareness groups on Facebook and Zalo to understand needs, explain the importance of blood donation to the public, and help people locate blood donation centers in the province.
From then on, blood donation gradually became a movement, with the number of people registering to donate blood at blood donation drives increasing steadily. The Nam Dinh Red Cross volunteer team also continued to grow stronger as more and more young people registered to participate. Currently, the team has about 30 members, including students, workers, and freelancers. On the third Sunday of every month, the team collaborates with Nam Dinh General Hospital to organize a regular blood donation program, helping to replenish the hospital's blood supply and strongly spreading the movement to all segments of the population.
Mr. Tran Phuoc Thang, Vice Chairman of the Ninh Binh Provincial Red Cross Society, said that in recent years, people's awareness of voluntary blood donation has improved, as evidenced by the increasing number of participants at blood donation drives. From the beginning of 2025 to the present, the entire province has organized more than 70 blood donation drives, attracting nearly 30,000 participants and receiving over 22,700 units of blood. This result is due to the influence of exemplary blood donors, the core figures of the movement, and also to the propaganda and mobilization efforts that have been intensified by units, clubs, and teams, contributing to spreading the culture of blood donation in the community.
According to the Vice President of the Ninh Binh Provincial Red Cross Society, after the two-tiered local government system came into operation, the Society guided units to consolidate the Blood Donation Campaign Committees at the commune and ward levels. From there, these committees will implement propaganda plans and coordinate with relevant units to organize blood collection events with the goal of receiving 39,800 units of blood or more by 2025, contributing to the blood bank and readily meeting the medical needs for treating patients.
