People with many land ownership certificates.

Though not of great material value, these special "red certificates"—issued only to those who participate in blood donation—carry immense humanitarian value, representing the noble act of kindness bestowed by countless compassionate individuals for the benefit of the community.

Perhaps few families possess as many special land ownership certificates ("red books") as the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Van, an official of the Bao Yen District People's Court, currently residing in Kim Tan Ward, Lao Cai City, with nearly 70 certificates. This is the result of a remarkable journey her family has undertaken over decades of involvement in the voluntary blood donation movement. With eyes shining with joy and pride, Ms. Van recounted her family's story to us.

Ms. Vân's family has three sons, and her eldest son, Trần Văn Hiếu, was the first in the family to participate in voluntary blood donation in 2012, while still a university student. Having studied in the medical field, Hiếu understood the benefits and value of humanitarian blood donation. At that time, the student confided in his mother and tried to persuade her to participate, but received a refusal and worry from his family. At that time, the voluntary blood donation movement was thriving in major cities, but it wasn't as widespread in Lào Cai, and information hadn't spread as it has now. Then, two years later, in 2014, by chance, Ms. Vân participated in voluntary blood donation for the first time while working at the People's Court of Lào Cai City.

Gradually understanding the benefits and humanitarian value of each drop of blood donated, she began to learn more about blood donation and actively participated. Since 2018, she has regularly donated blood when eligible, with some years seeing her donate 3-4 times.

To date, Ms. Thanh Vân has been involved in the voluntary blood donation movement for 11 years, participating a total of 26 times. Not only does she actively participate in the provincial blood donation movement, but on some occasions when she visits her children in Hanoi , she takes the opportunity to donate blood at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion.

Ms. Vân said, "Knowing the information and witnessing many cases where people were teetering on the brink of life and death, I realized how precious every drop of blood is." Perhaps because of this noble meaning, this woman actively encouraged her husband and children to participate in this noble endeavor.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Van has been involved in the voluntary blood donation movement for 11 years.

Mr. Tran Van Bang, Ms. Thanh Van's husband, shared: "With my wife's encouragement, I have participated in voluntary blood donation 21 times. On some days, even while working and with a lot of work, I would wake up early to donate blood before returning to work. There was also a time when I donated blood in the middle of the night when I learned that a patient being treated at the Provincial General Hospital urgently needed blood."

What my wife and I are most proud of is that all three of our sons, Tran Van Hieu, Tran Tuan Anh, and Tran Tuan Kiet, are also actively donating blood.

Looking back at the certificates, commendations, and awards recognizing their active participation in the voluntary blood donation movement, presented by various levels of government, Ms. Van and Mr. Bang were deeply moved. These small, red papers, like drops of blood given away, represent the heartfelt contributions they and their children have made to the community, with the hope of sharing and helping those in difficult circumstances or in critical situations.

Most recently, Ms. Van received further good news when she was the only individual from the province to be honored as one of the 100 outstanding voluntary blood donors nationwide in 2025.

Continuing the stories about people with multiple land ownership certificates, we had the opportunity to meet Ms. Do Thi Kieu Lien, President of the Red Cross Society of the Provincial Inspectorate, and Head of the Reserve Blood Donation Club of Lao Cai Province.

Having been involved in the voluntary blood donation movement for 9 years, Ms. Lien carefully preserves her 23 blood donation certificates as proof of her meaningful journey.

Ms. Lien shared: "I first participated in voluntary blood donation in March 2016 and the most recent time was in February 2025. In 2018, I was the Head of the Provincial Reserve Blood Donation Club with over 240 members. For me, the past 9 years have been a journey of love and responsibility."

Scrolling through her personal Facebook posts, Ms. Lien has saved many images and emotions about her blood donation experiences. More than anything, she hopes that information about voluntary blood donation will continue to spread, so that more people will know about it and participate, joining hands to share their precious blood to help those in critical condition or suffering from serious illnesses.

Not only did she participate in blood donation drives at the provincial level, but on several occasions, she drove herself to participate in blood donation drives in Bat Xat and Bao Thang districts. Her contributions to the voluntary blood donation movement have been recognized and rewarded by various levels and sectors, including a Certificate of Merit from the Vietnam Red Cross Central Committee ; a Certificate of Commendation from the Provincial Red Cross; and she was honored as one of the outstanding examples in the patriotic emulation movement of Lao Cai province during the 2016-2020 period.

Each person we met and spoke with was of a different age and occupation, but their common trait was a compassionate heart, always dedicated to a healthy community. We believe that the number of blood donations they possess will continue to increase, and the love and spiritual values will multiply, further extending the journey of compassion: "Every drop of blood given saves a life."
