From scrap to "green lesson"
In the campus of Ha Tien Kindergarten, Ha Tien Ward, the colorful play areas and rows of green trees all bear the mark of Ms. Mong Hong Hanh - Vice Principal in charge of the school. Since 2021, she initiated the movement "Making tools and toys from waste materials", mobilizing teachers and parents to participate. "Instead of expensive shopping, I want to take advantage of plastic bottles, milk cartons, bottle caps... for teachers to recycle into toys and learning models. It is both economical and helps children learn in a green and creative environment," said Ms. Hanh.
Every weekend, parents bring to school bottles, plastic boxes, foam, and bottle caps that have been washed so that teachers can create study corners, play areas, and teaching aids. Classes compete to decorate green spaces, and choose a typical creative corner each month. “Ms. Hanh is always the one who inspires us, directly working with us to make new toys, sharing ideas with each class,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Yen, a teacher at the school.
Thanks to this method, the school saves about 60 million VND/year in costs for buying plastic toys, while at the same time, creating a friendly, close and creative learning environment. Discarded bottles are now turned into slides, animals, flowers, small houses, bringing joy to children every day they go to class.
Currently, Ha Tien Kindergarten has 11 classes, 380 children and 20 teachers. All classes have a playground and a study corner decorated with recycled products, creating a lively and friendly learning environment. The school also launched a competition movement between classes, encouraging teachers to show creativity in each model and toy, contributing to making "green lessons" spread more and more widely.
“What I am most happy about is that the movement has received the consensus of parents. Every play corner, every recycled item contains love and responsibility to join hands for the children,” Ms. Mong Hong Hanh shared. In the 2024-2025 school year, the school won 1 A prize and 4 B prizes at the ward’s creative school supplies contest, and was recognized as a model of “Skilled Mass Mobilization” at the provincial level.
Spread love from the heart of a teacher
On the day of looking up the university entrance exam results, Le Che Thanh - a student of class 12X3, Giong Rieng High School, trembled when he saw his name being accepted to the Political Officer School, with a score of 27.2. In the small house located on the edge of the fields of Giong Rieng commune, his mother burst into tears not only because of happiness but also because she never dared to think that her son could step foot in the university lecture hall.
Thanh was born into a near-poor family. His father suffered from a serious hemangioma and lost his ability to work, and his mother worked many jobs to support her two children's education. At times, the burden of making a living made Thanh's dream of studying seem shattered. "I still remember, when I came to Thanh's house, seeing the small house with empty furniture, I told myself that I had to help her in every way so that she could continue studying. I could not stand by and watch a good student have to drop out of school because of poverty," recalled Mr. Dam Thanh Lac - Principal of Giong Rieng High School.
Thanh's story is just one of hundreds of poor students that Mr. Lac has mobilized teachers, parents, businesses and successful alumni to help poor students over the past 20 years. Currently, he maintains the "3 Enough Movement" (enough books, enough health insurance, enough clothes) before the opening ceremony, donating an average of 150 million VND/year; the "Love Arms" movement on the occasion of Lunar New Year, about 100 million VND/year; the "Dream Nurturing Club" encourages students to save to "support their friends", awarding 36 scholarships/month, worth 300,000 VND/scholarship.
Not only that, during the COVID-19 outbreak, through the program "Waves and computers for children", he helped poor students receive 2 laptops, 35 phones and 150 3G SIM cards for online learning. When a student had a serious illness, he called for sudden donations to support treatment. "We carefully surveyed each situation, went to their homes to verify, and asked local authorities to ensure fairness and the right recipients. All support is public and transparent. When we do it for real and with all our heart, parents and benefactors always trust and are willing to accompany us," said Mr. Lac.
Thanks to these practical actions, over the years, the school's dropout rate has always been below 1%, with good and excellent students achieving more than 70%. Many students who have been supported have now grown up and returned to support the next generation. Mr. Vo Van Banh - Chairman of the People's Committee of Giong Rieng Commune said: "Teacher Dam Thanh Lac not only helps poor students have the conditions to continue going to school but also spreads the spirit of mutual love in the community. This approach contributes to connecting the school, parents and society, clearly demonstrating the sense of responsibility and dedication of teachers to the cause of education ."
Stories from Ha Tien to Giong Rieng show that when teachers carry out mass mobilization work with all their hearts, the influence spreads not only to students but also to parents and society. Each initiative, each action, though small, contributes to fostering trust and compassion in today's educational environment.
