Google's most memorable April Fool's Day pranks.

Since 2020, Google has no longer participated in this event; however, this does not mean that people have forgotten the pranks the company used to pull off in the past.

Google released a lot of jokes on April 1st.

Mic Drop

In 2016, Google introduced a new feature for Gmail called Mic Drop. Thanks to the Send + Mic Drop button, the user's email reply would be sent along with an animated image of a Despicable Me Minion dropping a microphone. The entire sequence would then be archived, so the user wouldn't see any further replies.

Interestingly, many people accidentally used it because they didn't know what it was, or because it was located too close to the standard Send button. After receiving complaints from people who had accidentally used this feature with important emails, Google quickly disabled Mic Drop.

MentalPlex

The prank, launched in 2020, was simple and silly, making it highly appreciated. When looking at a swirling red and blue light, users were instructed to remove their hats and glasses, visualize in their minds what they were looking for, and click. The search page would return a random prank, such as "Unclear whether your search was about money or monkeys," along with Google's annotation that it was "April Fool's Day."

Google TiSP

With TiSP, Google introduced a "free, fast, and reliable" internet service for bathrooms that takes only minutes to install. In its description, the company states that users firmly hold one end of the fiber optic cable, drop the other end down the toilet bowl, and flush. Thanks to the patented Gflush system, the other end will operate through the plumbing system to the access point, where a "Water System Hardware Dispatcher" will connect it.

Chromerise

In 2011, Google launched Chromercise – a workout program for users' hands. According to details on Chris Wirght's Chrome Blog, Chromercise is a program that provides "a unique combination of aerobic movement and rhythmic padding," designed to tighten and tone the user's fingers.

Chromercise was an April Fool's Day prank in 2011.

Finger bands are recommended to make workouts more comfortable. Interestingly, Google itself actually sells these bands through its online store.

Google Nose

Introduced in 2013, Google Nose is a program designed to enhance a user's sense of smell. It's just a joke and doesn't actually allow users to smell flowers, smoke, or fire by "transferring photons with infrasonic waves." However, many people still hope this could become a reality in the future as virtual reality technology develops.

YouTube video collection

One of the best features of YouTube Premium is the ability to download videos for offline viewing. That was nonexistent back in 2012, when Google introduced the prank The YouTube Collection – a service that claimed to ship users every YouTube video on DVD via 175 trucks.

To receive it, users are asked to write comments and rate the video in an envelope and send it directly to the video creator. Of course, this is not real, because in reality, we can never download all the videos from YouTube when millions of videos are uploaded every day.
