Here are details of some of the most serious railway accidents in India over the past decades:

June 1981 : At least 800 people died when seven passenger train cars were blown off the tracks and plunged into a river during a storm.
July 1988 : A bullet train derailed and plunged into a lake due to strong winds in southern India, killing at least 106 people.
August 1995 : At least 350 people died when two trains collided 200 km from Delhi.

August 1999 : Two trains collided near Calcutta, resulting in the deaths of at least 285 people.
October 2005 : Several carriages of a passenger train derailed in Andhra Pradesh state. At least 77 people were killed.
July 2011 : Approximately 70 people were killed and over 300 injured when a mail train derailed in Fatehpur.

November 2016 : Approximately 146 people were killed and over 200 injured when a bullet train derailed in Uttar Pradesh state.
January 2017 : At least 41 people were killed after several carriages of a passenger train derailed in Andhra Pradesh state.
October 2018 : A train plowed into a crowd gathered on the tracks for a festival in Amritsar, India, killing at least 59 people and injuring 57 others.
