As the harvest season approaches, the price of green coffee beans remains high, bringing great joy and high expectations for a successful harvest among coffee growers in the province.

Currently, the price of green coffee beans on the market fluctuates between 63,000 and 64,000 VND/kg. According to many farmers, if this price level is maintained until the end of the harvest, coffee growers will have a successful crop this year.

This year's coffee harvest has brought joy to members of the Cong Bang Agricultural Service Cooperative (Ea Tu commune, Buon Ma Thuot city) as coffee prices are high and trending upwards daily. Ms. H'Djuech's family (Ko Tam village, Ea Tu commune) has 1 hectare of coffee, with an estimated yield of 3.5 tons. For her family, the main source of income is from the coffee plantation, so the high price is a great relief. Currently, her family is focusing on harvesting the first ripe coffee beans. With coffee prices currently above 60,000 VND/kg, this harvest will bring her family an additional 50 million VND in income, easing the financial burden of rising agricultural supplies and labor costs.

At this time, many coffee farmers in the province are beginning to harvest the first ripe coffee beans.

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Trong, Director of Cong Bang Agricultural Service Cooperative, the cooperative is currently collaborating with nearly 350 coffee-growing households in Ea Tu commune, covering a total area of over 320 hectares. In the 2023-2024 crop year, favorable weather conditions resulted in good coffee plant growth, yielding a stable productivity of approximately 3.8 tons/ha; the total harvest is estimated at over 1,200 tons of coffee beans. With coffee prices fluctuating between 62,000 and 64,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, members are expected to earn a profit of approximately 120 million VND/ha.

According to Mr. Trong, in addition to producing coffee for processing and roasting, the cooperative also has a contract to supply bulk green coffee beans to Dakman Vietnam Co., Ltd. Therefore, the cooperative is not worried about sales and focuses on production to ensure quality. Currently, the cooperative is producing coffee according to Fairtrade standards and moving towards organic production. At the same time, it encourages households to harvest when 100% of the beans are ripe, at which point the cooperative will purchase them at 70,000 VND/kg, which is 6,000-7,000 VND/kg higher than the market price. Thus, for each hectare of coffee, members will have an additional income of 10 million VND or more.

Having been involved in coffee cultivation for 24 years, Mr. Tran Van Thao (Dlie Ya commune, Krong Nang district) has never seen prices as high as this year, making him very happy. His family currently has 1.3 hectares of coffee plantations, with an estimated yield of 5.5 tons. According to Mr. Thao, this year's coffee crop is "both bountiful and profitable," with both yield and prices higher than the previous season. Mr. Thao shared: "Because our family's coffee plantation is organically grown, mainly using biological fertilizers and pesticides, the production costs are quite low. Entering the main harvest season, if coffee prices continue to rise as they are now, my family will reap a large profit this season, increasing our earnings by about 40% compared to last year."

Ms. H'Djuech (Ko Tam hamlet, Ea Tu commune, Buon Ma Thuot city) is delighted because coffee prices have increased significantly.

According to Le Ky Su, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Krong Nang district, the high coffee prices this harvest season have brought a joyful and enthusiastic atmosphere to coffee growers in the province in general and in Krong Nang in particular. This has motivated farmers to continue cultivating their crops, providing them with additional income to cover living expenses and reinvest for the next season.

In the 2023-2024 crop year, Krông Năng district has approximately 23,000 hectares of coffee, with an estimated yield of 69,000 tons; the expected harvest time is from November 2023 to January 2024. Besides the local advantage of having very suitable climate and soil conditions for growing coffee, farmers are increasingly focusing on improving the quality of their plantations by promoting the application of science and technology in cultivation and organic farming, thus maintaining stable crop yields at 3 tons/ha.

"To ensure a safe and smooth coffee harvest, the Department has advised the District People's Committee to develop a plan to strengthen security measures, as well as propose solutions to overcome the shortage of harvesting labor that causes ripe coffee cherries to fall off, affecting quality," Mr. Su said.

In the 2023-2024 crop year, the province has nearly 213,000 hectares of coffee, with an estimated average yield of 2.6 tons/ha; the total production is estimated at nearly 558,730 tons. Currently, people in the growing areas are harvesting the first ripe coffee beans. Studies show that coffee growers are increasingly aware that harvesting while the beans are still green and unripe seriously affects the quality and value of the coffee beans on the market. Therefore, they only harvest when the coffee plants reach a ripeness rate of 80% or more, instead of the previous practice of harvesting while the beans are still green.
