Ms. Tran Kim Hue (daughter of Ms. Tran Thi Duyen) said that the NNND (National Committee for the Preservation of the Mother Goddess) has gone through many ups and downs to preserve and promote the heritage of the Mother Goddess worship practice. Ms. Duyen also persevered in practicing the Mother Goddess worship even when it was considered superstition and the Phu Day relic site was dilapidated, unlike today. "Throughout her life, my mother dedicated much effort to preserving and transmitting the values of the Mother Goddess worship heritage," Ms. Hue shared.
People's Artist Tran Thi Duyen
According to the records of artisans kept at the Department of Cultural Heritage (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), People's Artist Tran Thi Duyen (also known as Mrs. Duc) was born in 1930 in Kim Thai commune, Vu Ban district, Nam Dinh province. She is knowledgeable and proficient in the intangible cultural heritage of the Vietnamese people's Tam Phu Mother Goddess worship. She also possesses many skills, knowledge, and the history and achievements of the deities, and skillfully performs the rituals in the practice of this religion.
In 1946, Ms. Tran Thi Duyen studied ritual practices under the guidance of the medium Tran Thi Duyet at Tien Huong Temple - Phu Day. In 1975, she was ordained as a medium (opening the temple) practicing the Tam Phu Mother Goddess worship of the Vietnamese people. From 1975 to 2017, she served as the temple caretaker of Tien Linh Temple and the incense burner at Tien Huong Temple - Phu Day.
According to the artisan's records, in 2014, Ms. Tran Thi Duyen participated in and supported the work of building the dossier on the Practice of the Tam Phu Mother Goddess Worship of the Vietnamese people to be submitted to UNESCO. She has taught the practice of the Tam Phu Mother Goddess worship of the Vietnamese people to many generations of students. Among them, three of Ms. Duyen's most exemplary students are Ms. Tran Thi Hue, Ms. Tran Thi Lan, and Ms. Vu Thanh Binh.
The records also indicate that when the question of whether she should be awarded the title of People's Artist was raised, both the local community and the provincial council voted 100% in favor.
In 2022, Ms. Tran Thi Duyen was awarded the title of People's Artist by the President of Vietnam . She was also previously awarded the Second Class Resistance Medal and the Third Class Resistance Order.
