These results not only improve the quality of life for the people but also make a significant contribution to the overall development of the province and the country.

A widespread healthcare system with a growing workforce.

According to Dr. Do Thi Nguyen, Director of the Dong Nai Department of Health, from the early days of many shortcomings, the healthcare system in Dong Nai has developed strongly in both scale and quality. The province currently has 8 central-level hospitals and institutes; 3 provincial-level general hospitals; 3 regional general hospitals; 5 specialized hospitals and 6 provincial-level specialized centers; along with 22 regional health centers, 95 commune/ward health stations, and 176 health station locations.

Dong Nai ranks among the top provinces nationwide in terms of its non-public healthcare system, with 12 private hospitals, 111 polyclinics, over 2,000 specialized clinics, and more than 4,000 pharmacies, drugstores, and medical service facilities.

The medical staff and healthcare workers in Dong Nai are increasingly numerous and of higher quality. Among the more than 15,000 medical staff, there are over 10 PhDs, 150 specialists (Level II), 110 masters, and nearly 1,000 specialists (Level I). The average ratio is 10 doctors, 16.5 nurses, and 4.6 pharmacists per 10,000 people. This is a crucial foundation for improving the quality of treatment and implementing advanced medical techniques locally.

With continuous development, many provincial hospitals in Dong Nai have now successfully implemented many new and advanced techniques that were previously only available at central-level hospitals, such as open-heart surgery, endoscopic heart surgery, ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), and controlled hypothermia. Provincial and regional hospitals have also mastered many other techniques such as endoscopic joint replacement, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, endoscopic orthopedics, and endoscopic general surgery.

In particular, the field of cardiology has made remarkable progress with 5 effective cardiovascular centers, promptly saving tens of thousands of patients' lives. Regarding stroke treatment, Dong Nai General Hospital was awarded Diamond certification by the World Stroke Organization; Thong Nhat General Hospital and Long Khanh Regional General Hospital have achieved Platinum certification.

According to Dr. Ngo Duc Tuan, Director of Dong Nai General Hospital, with a team of skilled doctors and modern facilities, equipment, and machinery, the hospital has been achieving positive results. This allows local residents to access high-quality medical services right in their area without having to travel far, reducing costs, time, and effort.

“The hospital will implement kidney transplant techniques and establish three specialized centers: oncology, emergency, and cardiology, not only to develop expertise within the hospital but also to connect with and support lower-level hospitals and medical centers. In that case, the biggest beneficiaries will be the people,” shared Dr. Ngo Duc Tuan.

Building smart healthcare.

In line with the digital transformation trend, the health sector in Dong Nai is resolutely implementing solutions to effectively carry out this work.

Compared to the past, the registration process for medical examinations and treatment at healthcare facilities in the province has significantly improved. 100% of healthcare facilities have implemented health insurance registration using citizen identification cards.

In particular, medical records have been gradually digitized using electronic medical records, improving management efficiency and saving costs, time, and effort for healthcare staff.

According to Dr. Phan Van Huyen, Director of Long Khanh Regional General Hospital, the hospital has implemented electronic medical records since 2020. To date, the system has been continuously upgraded, bringing many benefits to doctors, nurses, patients, and administrators alike. The hospital has also applied artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnostic imaging, providing strong support to doctors in diagnosing and treating patients.

Besides Long Khanh Regional General Hospital, Thong Nhat General Hospital has officially implemented electronic medical records to replace paper records. 27 other hospitals and regional health centers in the province are striving to accelerate progress and are determined to implement electronic medical records before September 30, 2025, in accordance with the directives of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Health. In addition, the Remote Medical Consultation System Project, with a total investment of over 20 billion VND, and the Project to Invest in Information Technology Terminal Equipment to Serve the Digital Transformation of the Dong Nai Health Sector, with a total investment of nearly 25 billion VND, are being expedited. This aims towards the goal of building a smart healthcare system.

Dr. Luu Van Tuong, Director of the Cam My Regional Medical Center, said: "To improve the quality of medical examination and treatment and aim for patient satisfaction, the center's management board has identified building a team of highly qualified, skilled, and dedicated professionals as the most important thing. Therefore, in recent times, many doctors, after receiving advanced training, have returned and committed to the center, working together to implement many new and advanced techniques. The center's facilities have been invested in, built, and renovated to be spacious and clean, helping patients feel more comfortable and satisfied when coming for examination and treatment."

Dong Nai currently has over 13,400 hospital beds, equivalent to 30 beds per 10,000 people, ranking second in the Southeast region, only after Ho Chi Minh City. To date, there is no longer the situation where patients have to share beds, sleep on the floor, or in pairs as before.

Director of the Department of Health, Do Thi Nguyen, emphasized: To improve the quality of comprehensive healthcare for the people, the Dong Nai health sector has identified preventive work as playing a very important role. In reality, thanks to effective preventive work, the health sector has successfully controlled many dangerous diseases such as Covid-19, dengue fever, measles, hand, foot and mouth disease…

“In the coming time, the health sector in Dong Nai will shift strongly from a passive mindset of examination and treatment to a proactive approach to care and disease prevention, with the goal of ensuring that every citizen has access to quality healthcare services, especially in remote areas and areas inhabited by ethnic minorities. The grassroots healthcare system will continue to be invested in and upgraded systematically to truly be the force closest to the people, understanding the people best, providing the best primary healthcare for the people, and reducing the number of patients who have to be transferred to higher-level facilities,” shared Ms. Do Thi Nguyen, Director of the Department of Health.
