Providing swimming lessons opportunities for underprivileged children.
These summer days, the swimming pool in Dan Dien commune is always filled with the laughter of children participating in free swimming lessons organized by the Women's Union of the commune in coordination with the Community Capacity Building Support Fund.
The course is for 200 primary and secondary school students in the area. Over 13 sessions, the students are taught basic swimming skills, how to handle situations in water environments, and knowledge about preventing and responding to drowning incidents.
Nguyen Bao Vy, a student from Dang Huu Pho Secondary School, shared: “After nearly two weeks of participating in the class, I have grasped the basic swimming techniques and feel very happy to be learning to swim for free. Not only have I improved my health, but I have also gained skills to protect myself in dangerous situations in the water.”
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Dan Dien commune, the class was organized with a budget of approximately 70 million VND from sponsorships and support from benefactors. "We hope that the children will be equipped with basic swimming skills and know how to protect themselves from the risk of drowning, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds," Ms. Ngoc said.
Not only in Dan Dien, the Women's Union of Quang Dien commune also mobilized resources to organize free swimming lessons for 100 students in the area.
In Thuy Xuan ward, the free swimming class organized by the Women's Union of the ward in coordination with the Public Service Center, the Youth Union, and sponsoring units also attracted a large number of students. In the cool water, the children attentively practiced each movement under the guidance of the teacher.
The course lasted 16 days with 40 students participating, mostly from disadvantaged backgrounds. According to the Thuy Xuan Ward Women's Union, most of the participating students did not know how to swim due to limited family finances and the inability to attend paid swimming courses.
Let's work together to prevent drowning among children.
Despite efforts to raise awareness and educate children on accident and injury prevention, drowning remains one of the leading causes of death among children. In many rural areas with numerous rivers, lakes, ponds, and dams, access to swimming lessons is limited, and the risk of drowning accidents is ever-present.
Every summer, when children have more time to play outdoors, the demand for swimming in rivers and lakes increases, but so does the risk of water-related accidents. Meanwhile, many disadvantaged families cannot afford to send their children to paid swimming lessons.
In reality, to minimize drowning accidents among children, in addition to the involvement of relevant authorities, the cooperation of the entire society is essential. Mobilizing resources from businesses, charitable organizations, and philanthropists to open free swimming lessons is becoming an effective solution, helping many children access this important life skill.
According to Ms. Dang Do Lien Chi, Deputy Head of the Women's Affairs Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the city, the City Women's Union has directed and mobilized the Women's Unions of communes and wards to actively connect with units, businesses, and philanthropists to organize free swimming lessons for students in rural areas and students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
"Every child who knows how to swim has another chance to prevent drowning accidents, contributing to protecting their lives and future. This is also a way to mobilize community resources to care for children," Ms. Chi emphasized.
