Mr. Pham Van Nghet, residing in Tan Hoa B hamlet, expressed his concerns as he took us to the area near the landfill. After each rain, leachate from the towering piles of garbage overflows into the surrounding environment. Mr. Nghet said: “The landfill is overloaded, and the leachate flows into canals, ponds, and rice fields, causing environmental pollution and directly affecting the lives of nearby households. We hope that the authorities will soon find a solution to relocate the landfill away from residential areas. In the meantime, a solution is needed to limit the leachate from overflowing during heavy rains.”
According to many residents, pollution occurs not only during the rainy season but almost year-round. On sunny days, the stench from the landfill is overwhelming; and when it rains, leachate from the garbage flows into canals and ponds, leaving residents constantly worried about the risk of water pollution and its impact on agricultural production.
The old Huynh Huu Nghia town landfill, covering an area of approximately 7,000 m², has been operating since 2011. In 2018, a 600 kg/hour incinerator was installed. However, by 2021, the incinerator was damaged, resulting in all waste being collected in the open air. Under the pressure of increasing waste volume, the landfill has repeatedly become overloaded; the local authorities have had to transport over 4,433 tons of waste to the Soc Trang Waste Treatment Plant to alleviate the burden. Currently, the landfill not only receives waste from Long Hung commune but also serves as a collection point for waste from My Tu, My Huong, and My Phuoc communes. Long Hung commune generates approximately 6.75 tons of household waste daily, but only about 2 tons are collected by the waste collection unit. The remainder is mainly disposed of by residents themselves through burial or incineration.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dien, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Long Hung commune, said that the locality has repeatedly petitioned the competent authorities to invest in a centralized waste treatment plant to definitively resolve the overload situation of the existing landfill. In the short term, the commune will closely coordinate with the waste collection unit to strengthen landfill management, regularly cover the landfill to limit the spread of odors and leachate; and at the same time, promote propaganda to raise people's awareness of sorting, collecting, and disposing of waste according to regulations.
During a working session with the survey team of the National Assembly delegation of Can Tho City on the implementation of environmental protection policies and laws, the People's Committee of Long Hung commune continued to request the city to soon implement the project of a centralized waste treatment plant in My Huong commune to handle household waste from localities in the former My Tu district. This is considered a fundamental solution to reduce pressure on the current landfill and gradually overcome the long-standing environmental pollution situation.
The concerns of people living around landfills are not a new story. What they hope for is not just temporary solutions, but long-term solutions to improve the environment, protect water resources and agricultural land, and allow people to live in clean air.
