The journey of nurturing treasures.

Since ancient times, Ngoc Linh ginseng in Kon Tum has been used by the Xe Dang people as a "hidden medicinal plant," treating many diseases according to traditional remedies.

As of June 2022, the company owned more than 60 showrooms and over 100 dealerships.

In 1972, during the height of the war, the Military Medical Department of Zone 5 was tasked with finding medicinal plants to nourish the soldiers. Having learned of a "hidden medicinal plant" used by the local people that could boost health, the department dispatched a team of pharmacists to search for it. From there, the team began their journey up the Ngoc Linh mountain range in search of this precious medicinal plant.

A year later, the team found this species growing in clusters at an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level on the Ngoc Linh mountain range in Kon Tum province.

In 1985, Dr. Ha Thi Dung and Professor Grushvizky identified this as a new species of science and endemic to Vietnam, giving it the scientific name Panax Vietnamensis Ha et Grushv.

Ngoc Linh ginseng plants are grown under the canopy of old-growth forests at an altitude of 2,000 meters.

However, after many years since its discovery, Ngoc Linh ginseng is at risk of being overexploited by local people.

Faced with the threat of extinction of Ngoc Linh ginseng, more than 20 years ago in Kon Tum province, Mr. Tran Hoan - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ngoc Linh Kon Tum Ginseng Joint Stock Company - was always concerned about preserving the Ngoc Linh ginseng plant. He began collecting wild Ngoc Linh ginseng plants to use as seedlings.

"In 1997, I started collecting Ngoc Linh ginseng from people in the villages around Ngoc Linh mountain to cultivate. After only a few years, the seedlings produced flowers and seeds. That's how I ended up with an entire garden of original ginseng plants, preserving the precious genetic resources and perfecting the process of sowing, cultivating, and caring for Ngoc Linh ginseng," Mr. Hoan confided.

The successful breeding and preservation of ginseng plants under the forest canopy was the foundation for the establishment of Ngoc Linh Kon Tum Ginseng Joint Stock Company in 2006. Along with that, the company was allocated 5,000 hectares of land by Kon Tum province to further expand the scale of Ngoc Linh ginseng cultivation.

From there, Mr. Hoan continued to develop his ginseng garden according to his initial aspirations. However, at that time, the infrastructure was very limited and faced many difficulties; Ngoc Linh ginseng was very susceptible to damage from birds and rats, from seeds to tubers. These were also major obstacles that caused Mr. Hoan and his companions a great deal of worry.

Furthermore, Ngoc Linh ginseng is a relatively unknown variety, and information and documentation on its cultivation are scarce, making this journey even more challenging.

Overcoming difficulties and continuing the mission of developing Ngoc Linh ginseng, Mr. Hoan and his colleagues diligently researched how to cultivate and care for the ginseng plants. They eventually overcame the challenges, and the fruits of their labor ripened.

Standing alongside the people

In January 2018, the Kon Tum K5 Ngoc Linh Ginseng brand officially launched its products, which include extracts from Ngoc Linh ginseng roots over 10 years old with abundant medicinal properties.

In September 2018, the Kon Tum K5 Ngoc Linh ginseng garden had the honor of welcoming a delegation led by former President Nguyen Xuan Phuc. During his visit, he referred to Ngoc Linh ginseng as "Vietnam's national treasure."

Kon Tum Ngoc Linh Ginseng Joint Stock Company is one of the few units to date that has been certified by the Kon Tum Provincial People's Committee as having an original ginseng garden.

To standardize its plantations, the company has implemented the GACP WHO standard, the highest standard applied to medicinal plants, issued by the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health. In addition, all products have obtained prestigious certifications such as HACCP, CODEX, ISO, etc.

To date, Kon Tum K5 Ngoc Linh Ginseng has owned 7,000 hectares of cultivated land, with 1,000 hectares of ginseng currently being cared for and developed, including over 200 hectares of Ngoc Linh ginseng over 10 years old. Ngoc Linh Kon Tum Ginseng Joint Stock Company has been sponsoring the National Football Championship continuously from the 2022 season to the end of the 2024 season.

Beyond preserving the original genetic resources of Ngoc Linh ginseng, Kon Tum K5 Ngoc Linh ginseng also quietly protects the pristine forests and creates livelihoods for the local people.

In 2022, the company exported over 2 million Ngoc Linh ginseng seedlings from its nursery for planting and developing medicinal plants. This is a strategy to turn this precious medicinal plant into a product that alleviates poverty and even enriches many villages and the Xe Dang ethnic minority communities.

Moreover, the company has created jobs for thousands of Xê Đăng ethnic minority households. It provides tens of thousands of free seedlings each year to local people to develop their economy. This ongoing partnership has helped change people's perceptions regarding forest management and protection combined with the cultivation of medicinal plants.
