Despite the extremely hot weather, local farmers are still busy harvesting spring rice and processing straw to prepare for the new crop.
In the fields of Vo Lao commune, Van Ban district, the harvest season is bustling these days. The hot sun and dry rice create ideal conditions for people to speed up the harvest in time. The sound of combine harvesters, threshing machines, and cheerful laughter echo throughout the fields. The ripe, golden rice stalks are proof of a bountiful spring harvest.
In recent years, people in Vo Lao commune have actively applied mechanization to rice production, especially in the harvesting stage, helping to reduce labor and harvesting time. Mr. Ha Khuong Duy, Chieng 3 village, Vo Lao commune said: In the past, my family used to spend a day harvesting more than 3 sao of rice fields, but now with a combine harvester, it only takes about 20 minutes to transport the rice home. The rental price of a combine harvester is 30,000 VND/bag of rice (60 kg). This year, the weather is quite favorable, the rice crop is good, my family harvested nearly 1 ton of rice.
Also farming in the fields of Vo Lao commune, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuyen's family in Chieng 1 village has rented a combine harvester and has to harvest by hand because some of the fields are low and the weak ground is not suitable for the machine to run. Mr. Tuyen said: Harvesting by machine is both fast and economical, but some fields still have to be harvested by hand. After harvesting and transporting the rice home, we take advantage of the sunny weather to process the straw, burn it to get ash to sow rice seedlings for the winter-spring rice crop. Most people here harvest rice for their daily life and to raise livestock and poultry.
According to the people in Vo Lao commune, the effective application of mechanization helps the rice harvest become more economical and faster. With the current progress, the entire rice field of nearly 500 hectares in Vo Lao commune can be harvested in about a week. After that, farmers immediately start preparing the land and sowing rice seedlings to produce the winter-spring rice crop.
Similarly, in the fields of Ban Qua commune, Bat Xat district, farmers are also actively harvesting the spring rice crop. Farmers here use both combine harvesters and manual harvesters, depending on the conditions of the fields.
Ms. Lo Thi Minh, Cooc Cai village said: This crop, my family sowed 11kg of seeds and harvested 15 bags of rice (60kg/bag). The harvest was convenient because we had a combine harvester. The cost of renting the machine was also more economical than harvesting by hand. After harvesting, we collected the straw for the livestock, and burned some of it as ash to prepare for sowing. We let the land rest for about 20 days and then started producing the winter-spring rice crop.
Not only farmers in Vo Lao and Ban Qua communes but also farmers in lowland areas are currently entering the early spring rice harvest season. Meanwhile, the main spring rice crop is in the green, ripe, red-tailed stage. Late rice is in the earing and flowering stage.
In the spring-summer crop, farmers in the whole province planted 9,871 hectares of rice (Lao Cai city 489 hectares, Bat Xat 1,006 hectares, Muong Khuong 424 hectares, Bao Thang 1,563 hectares, Van Ban 3,350 hectares, Bao Yen 2,595 hectares, Bac Ha 444 hectares). Authorities recommend that farmers take advantage of favorable weather, increase the application of science and technology in production, proactively harvest spring rice; take advantage of conditions to focus on drying, preventing post-harvest loss, ensuring rice quality. It is necessary to regulate water, retain water in the fields; prepare machinery, agricultural materials, seeds, and fertilizers to deploy summer-autumn crop production on schedule.
