TPO – Melon growers in Ha Tinh are in the main harvest season for cantaloupes and young melons. This year, favorable weather conditions have allowed the melons to grow well and yield high productivity, helping people earn a decent income.
These days, Ha Tinh province is experiencing intense heat. This is also the time when dozens of households in Cam Son commune, Cam Xuyen district, are busy with their main crop, growing young melons, cantaloupes, etc. |
Cam Son commune currently has over 100 households growing young melons and cantaloupes on an area of over 11 hectares. |
This year, Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan (Phuc Son village, Cam Son commune) planted young melons and cantaloupes on 7 sao (approximately 0.7 hectares) of land. “The weather has been favorable, so at this time of year, my family harvests 2 quintals of young melons and 0.5 quintals of cantaloupes daily. Although the price of melons isn't as high as in previous years, it still provides a decent income,” Ms. Loan said. |
According to locals, the main season for young melons begins in early April and lasts for several months. Young melons are heat-tolerant, so if the weather is hot and sunny, the plants will have a high fruit set rate and bear fruit continuously. |
Because the melons grow quickly, people have to harvest them daily; if left to ripen, they will have too many seeds and become unusable. |
Currently, the price of cantaloupe purchased directly from the farm is 25,000 VND/kg; young cantaloupe is 6,000 VND/kg. On average, for every 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of cantaloupe, farmers can earn 30-40 million VND per season. |
According to the leaders of Cam Son commune People's Committee, this year's favorable weather has delighted local melon growers, resulting in a bumper crop. Melons yield five times more than rice, leading many households in the commune to expand their melon cultivation area in recent years. The local authorities are also supporting farmers in caring for the plants and controlling pests and diseases that damage the crop. |
