Ms. Hong Thu Phuong (residing in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City), whose child is 7 years old, said she is looking for a summer day camp program for her child this year because the summer break is approaching, but both parents still have to work, and grandparents live far away and cannot leave the child with them. "Leaving children home alone is not good, and sending them to relatives means they just watch TV all day. It's best to enroll them in a skills-based day camp. I'm currently researching district children's centers and private primary schools near my home to see which program is suitable and reasonably priced," Ms. Thu Phuong said.

High demand, diverse programs

Around the end of May 2023, the information channels of children's centers in districts and counties, including Thu Duc City in Ho Chi Minh City, also widely disseminated information about the 2023 summer day camp programs for parents to refer to and register early.

For example, at the District 4 Children's Center, there is a half-day talent and life skills class, course 1, from June 5th to 15th. Classes for students aged 7-13 will take place from morning to afternoon. These classes are organized with many activities such as talent and life skills lessons in the morning. At lunchtime, children have lunch, rest, and in the afternoon they continue to participate in workshops, experiential playgrounds, afternoon snacks, and parents pick up their children.

At the Thu Duc City Children's House, the 2023 summer day camp program runs from June 1st to August 15th.

The 2023 summer day camp classes are held at two locations of the Thu Duc City Children's House: the main location (281 Vo Van Ngan Street, Linh Chieu Ward, Thu Duc City) and location 1 (200 Nguyen Duy Trinh Street, Binh Trung Tay Ward, Thu Duc City).

During the course, children participate in life skills classes, conversational English, 3D movie screenings, and craft workshops…

In addition, students are trained in extracurricular subjects such as: vocal music, piano, ballet, modern dance, belly dance, aerobics, basketball, swimming, robot assembly…; and martial arts classes such as: taekwondo, karatedo, aikido, traditional martial arts…

Each week, as part of the summer day camp program, children can participate in field trips, play outdoors, and explore nature.

Notably, private, bilingual, and international preschools in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as educational companies, are widely promoting their 2023 summer daycare programs with various options and prices tailored to different customer segments.

A representative from Viet Dang Quang Education Company (Tran Hung Dao Street, Ward 11, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City) stated that this year they are organizing a summer day camp for students aged 6-12 in 2023.

The daycare program runs from Monday to Friday (parents can register their children for an additional Saturday experience), with drop-off at 7:00 AM and pick-up at 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM.

Parents can register their children for individual courses, each lasting one week, or for the complete set of four courses. The skills included in the 2023 summer day camp schedule are training in presentation skills, communication and interpersonal skills, self-reliance and self-care skills, self-protection skills, and sex education.

In the section on "self-protection skills and sex education," which is of great interest to many parents, students discussed signs of danger and safety; how to handle situations when alone or lost; accident and injury prevention; fire escape practice; first aid practice; sex education and prevention of abuse…

What should you consider when choosing a summer day camp for your child?

According to Mr. Le Van Ket, manager of the Viet Dang Quang Life Skills Center in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City, the first thing to find out is whether the center or organization running the summer day camp is reputable, trustworthy, and legally compliant.

Parents need to find out if the program offered by the organizers for the summer day camp is suitable for their child's age, interests, and abilities. For example, many parents are interested in summer day camps that help children develop skills before officially starting first grade; older children will want to experience various skills and talents.

"An important thing that parents should also pay attention to is food safety and hygiene for children during summer daycare. Reputable centers will have certificates guaranteeing food safety and hygiene. Parents also need to consider whether the distance from their home to the center is close and convenient for dropping off and picking up their children, and pay attention to the start and end times to see if they fit the parents' work schedules. In addition, parents need to pay attention to whether the price of the center or unit is suitable for their family," said Mr. Le Van Ket.

Exciting summer skills classes

Not only are day camps popular summer programs, but summer skills training courses are also very active in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Cultural Center in the summer of 2023, there was a summer skills course called "Super Kids": Fun Learning Skills - Confident Creativity.

With content focusing on Children's Independence, Children's Confidence, Children's Mettle, and Children's Creativity, the lessons and content are diverse, and children learn in the mornings from 8:00 to 11:30.

Children's centers in districts and communes, including Thu Duc City in Ho Chi Minh City, offer many summer enrichment classes for students, with a wide variety of subjects.

The District 10 Children's Center in Ho Chi Minh City regularly offers talent classes for students. In May and June 2023 (a two-month course), they offered classes such as drawing - advanced drawing; calligraphy; child modeling; chess - competition training; modern dance; aerobics; vocal music; guitar; organ; basketball; karate…

Notably, at the Ho Chi Minh City Children's House (36 Le Quy Don Street, Vo Thi Sau Ward, District 3), on June 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, 2023, there will be a Kids Fest 2023 with various spaces such as Digital Technology - I Love Science; Music Exchange - Colors of Childhood; Sports Training - Happy and Healthy Summer; Reading with Children; Culinary Culture; Family Fun…
