According to The Guardian on September 22nd, semiconductor giant Nvidia is expected to invest $100 billion in OpenAI , the developer of ChatGPT. In addition to the capital investment, Nvidia will also provide its most advanced data center chips to support its partner's AI infrastructure.
This is seen as a major turning point in the relationship between the two tech giants, as both are at the center of the current AI wave.
Reportedly, this massive investment will be made through two separate but closely related transactions.
Specifically, OpenAI will pay directly to Nvidia to purchase chips, while Nvidia will simultaneously invest in OpenAI in exchange for a non-controlling stake.
The initial $10 billion investment will be disbursed immediately after the chip purchase agreement is signed. Nvidia had previously invested $6.6 billion in the company.
According to The Guardian , OpenAI is currently in the process of transitioning to a for-profit company model. Following a $13 billion investment from Microsoft in 2023, the company committed to sharing up to 49% of the profits with its software partner.
In a joint statement, OpenAI and Nvidia announced they have signed a memorandum of understanding for a historic strategic partnership, aiming to deploy at least 10 gigawatts (GW) of chip capacity from Nvidia – a massive figure that demonstrates their ambition to rapidly expand the AI ecosystem.
"Computing infrastructure will be the foundation of the future economy . What we are building with Nvidia will create new AI breakthroughs and bring them to people and businesses on a global scale," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
CEO Sam Altman has repeatedly and publicly acknowledged that one of OpenAI's biggest hurdles today is access to computing infrastructure – particularly the number of GPUs needed to train and run large-scale AI models.
The two companies said they are in the final stages of finalizing the details of the agreement, with plans for official implementation to begin in the second half of 2026.
