According to the Guardian newspaper, on September 22, the semiconductor giant Nvidia is expected to invest $100 billion in OpenAI - the developer of ChatGPT. In addition to the capital investment, Nvidia will also provide the most advanced data center chips to support the partner's AI infrastructure.

This is considered a major turning point in the relationship between the two technology giants, as both are at the center of the current AI wave.

It is understood that the huge investment will be made through two separate but closely related transactions.

Specifically, OpenAI will pay directly to buy chips from Nvidia, while Nvidia will simultaneously invest capital in OpenAI in exchange for a non-controlling stake.

The initial $10 billion deal will be disbursed immediately after the chip purchase contract is signed. Nvidia previously invested $6.6 billion in this company.

According to the Guardian , OpenAI is currently in the process of transitioning to a for-profit company model. Following a $13 billion investment from Microsoft in 2023, the company has committed to sharing up to 49% of its profits with this software partner.

In a joint announcement, OpenAI and Nvidia said they have signed a memorandum of understanding on a historic strategic collaboration agreement, with the goal of deploying at least 10 gigawatts (GW) of chip capacity from Nvidia a huge number that shows the ambition to rapidly expand the AI ecosystem.

"Computing infrastructure will be the foundation of the future economy . What we are building with Nvidia will enable new AI breakthroughs and put them in the hands of people and businesses at a global scale," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

CEO Sam Altman has publicly admitted many times that one of OpenAI's biggest hurdles today is access to computing infrastructure - specifically the number of GPUs needed to train and run large-scale AI models.

The two companies said they are in the process of finalizing the final details of the deal, with formal implementation planned to begin in the second half of 2026.
