Martin Odegaard easily won the vote of Arsenal players to continue to be chosen captain for the 2025/26 season.

Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed Martin Odegaard will remain Arsenal captain after a vote ahead of the Premier League opener on 17 August at Old Trafford. The decision was announced just a day after former captain Tony Adams called for Declan Rice to be handed the armband.

“Yesterday’s vote was huge, almost unanimous: everyone voted for the same man – Martin Odegaard,” Arteta said. “This is the clearest sign of who the players trust to lead, protect, lift and help the team win. The most important thing is who they feel will be there when times are tough, who will reassure them and represent the club every time they step out onto the pitch.”

Entering the match with a lot of pressure, Arteta has high expectations for new signing Viktor Gyokeres. “We have to understand him and create an environment to develop his potential. Many strikers from other leagues have been successful in the Premier League. Our job is to create the right context for Viktor to do what he does best - score goals,” the Spanish coach affirmed.
