Onana has no future at MU. |
The agreement between the two clubs was finalized with a loan fee of approximately £1.3 million, and the Turkish club will cover the majority of the Cameroonian goalkeeper's salary.
According to the Daily Mail , Onana has signed the necessary paperwork to return to Trabzonspor, thus ending any possibility of him returning to Michael Carrick's squad. However, this contract does not include a buy-out clause, meaning MU still retains ownership of the 30-year-old player.
Last season, Onana performed quite well for Trabzonspor, making 34 appearances in all competitions. He kept six clean sheets in the league and contributed to the team winning the Turkish Cup. This title adds to the Cameroonian goalkeeper's impressive collection of achievements, alongside three Eredivisie titles with Ajax, the Coppa Italy with Inter Milan , and the FA Cup with Manchester United.
Onana left Old Trafford last September after he was no longer in the coaching staff's plans. Manchester United had hoped to sell him outright to recoup some of the £45 million they paid Inter Milan in 2023. However, no club met the asking price, forcing MU to continue with loan options.
Transferring Onana to Trabzonspor also significantly reduced Old Trafford's wage bill, as they no longer had to bear the goalkeeper's income of approximately £120,000 per week.
This move also confirms Senne Lammens' position as Manchester United's number one goalkeeper. The Belgian goalkeeper made a strong impression in his first Premier League season with 32 starts, 8 clean sheets, and was called up for the 2026 World Cup .
