Railway giant reaches transportation revenue milestone of 3,723 billion VND.

The business results of Vietnam Railways Corporation in the first nine months of 2024 could have been even better if the company had not suffered the negative impacts of Typhoon No. 3 and its aftermath.

In the first nine months of 2024, Vietnam Railways Corporation's freight transport volume reached 3.657 million loaded tons and 2.76 billion ton-kilometers, representing increases of 7% and 1.8% respectively compared to the same period last year.

During the same period, the Corporation transported 5.762 million passengers and 2.24 billion passenger-kilometers, representing increases of 22.6% and 18.1% respectively compared to the same period last year.

The aforementioned passenger and freight operations generated 3,723.6 billion VND in transport revenue for Vietnam Railways Corporation, an increase of 18.5% compared to the same period last year.

Over the past period, Vietnam Railways Corporation has proactively and actively implemented many solutions to improve service quality and increase passenger transport volume.

With the desire to provide more diverse and flexible services, meeting the needs and increasingly aligning with customer preferences, the Corporation has launched many new products and services, receiving attention and support from various segments of the population and train passengers.

The growth in output and revenue of these products, such as the SE 19/20 train and the Da Lat - Trai Mat train, demonstrates a positive shift in the Corporation's product diversification efforts.

In addition, the Corporation is also coordinating with the National Tourism Administration and provincial tourism departments to implement the plan for promoting and developing railway tourism in the period 2024-2026.

Regarding goods, the Corporation continues to implement solutions to increase freight transport volume, especially international intermodal rail transport, with total import and export goods through border gates reaching 141% compared to the same period last year. In addition, the Corporation continues to actively work with the People's Committees of several provinces to strengthen import and export activities through border gates via rail.

In addition, the Corporation has actively coordinated with relevant units to promote the application of information technology to support and improve the efficiency of transportation management, while providing more services, amenities, and promotional programs for train passengers through cooperation with diverse partners such as Vinpearl, Sun World, Momo, VN Pay, Halovy, Epay, etc.; integrating the electronic ticketing system with many social media platforms such as Zalo, Facebook, Youtube, etc.

Initially, a solution for connecting and selling tickets on Google Maps has been agreed upon, opening a gateway to allow payment for train tickets using international cards issued by international banks (for purchasing tickets abroad) from August 1, 2024.

However, over the past nine months, railway transport has been significantly affected by objective factors, most recently the consequences of Typhoon No. 3, which forced the Corporation to suspend train operations on several railway lines (canceling 22 freight trains and over 54 passenger trains).

In September 2024, freight transport volume and revenue also decreased sharply compared to the same period last year, reaching only 69.8% in terms of tonnage loaded, 84.3% in ton-kilometers, and 80.4% in revenue; total damage caused by typhoon No. 3 was nearly 200 billion VND.

To quickly restore the railway infrastructure and stabilize the business operations of enterprises and the lives of workers affected by Typhoon No. 3 and its remnants, the Vietnam Railway Corporation requests that the competent authorities recommend to the Prime Minister and request the Ministry of Finance to promptly allocate sufficient funds for the repair and restoration of railway infrastructure to ensure the safety of the structures and train operations.

Regarding property damage caused by the company's investments and the decline in railway transport revenue, the Corporation requests the Ministry of Transport to advise the competent authorities to consider continuing to apply the policy of reducing railway infrastructure usage fees for the following years and to implement tax exemption and reduction policies to support the company in overcoming difficulties and quickly restoring production and business activities.
