OpenAI has completed a fundraising deal totaling $6.6 billion from a group of investors including Thrive Capital, SoftBank Group Corp., Dragoneer Investment Group, Abu Dhabi-based MGX, and T. Rowe Price. At this price, the company's market capitalization, based on the total number of shares, has reached $500 billion, far exceeding the $300 billion raised in the SoftBank-led funding round earlier this year. The share sale also pushes OpenAI's valuation past SpaceX's previous $400 billion mark.
OpenAI is a non-profit organization, founded in 2015 with the initial mission of developing AI for the "highest good of mankind." However, after partnering with Microsoft in 2019, the company has shifted strongly towards commercialization.
The interest from major technology corporations contributed to making OpenAI the world's largest startup. This coincided with Microsoft and OpenAI signing a new non-binding agreement, allowing OpenAI to restructure into a conventional, for-profit company.
OpenAI's rapid growth stems from a surge in investment focused on leading AI companies. While not yet profitable, OpenAI is at the center of an "AI infrastructure boom." Recently, the company signed contracts with Oracle and SK Hynix to support the massive, $500 billion Stargate AI data center project. OpenAI, along with Oracle and SoftBank, also announced plans to build five new AI data centers in the US, part of the ambitious Stargate mega-project.
OpenAI is expected to receive up to $100 billion in investment from chipmaker Nvidia, solidifying its position as a leading company in the race to build AI systems that can transform the economy and society. This move will allow OpenAI to expand the data center infrastructure needed to run ChatGPT, an application that is projected to reach 700 million weekly global users by August 2025.
Most recently, on October 6th, chipmaker AMD announced it will supply AI chips to OpenAI under a multi-year agreement, expected to generate tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue and giving ChatGPT creator the right to purchase approximately 10% of the chipmaker's shares. AMD stated that OpenAI will build a 1 GW data center using its upcoming MI450 chip early next year and will begin recording revenue at that time.
In the long term, OpenAI faces increasing competitive pressure from rivals like Google and Anthropic, who are also raising capital at a rapid pace. To respond, OpenAI has embarked on a series of new technology products, including two open, free AI models that can simulate human reasoning. A few months ago, China's DeepSeek garnered global attention with its own open-source software. OpenAI is proving to be equally competitive by releasing its most powerful GPT-5 model in August 2025, aiming to solidify its leading position in an increasingly competitive field.
