According to Theverge , the ChatGPT app provided by OpenAI for free offers chat history synchronization with the web and voice input, powered by OpenAI's open-source Whisper speech recognition model. Users can download the app from the App Store, where it works on both iPhone and iPad. OpenAI said it will first provide the ChatGPT app on iOS in the US before expanding to other countries "in the coming weeks".
After iOS, OpenAI Will Soon Bring Its AI Chatbot to Android Phones
OpenAI had no plans to launch a mobile app for ChatGPT, but the incredible popularity of the tool prompted the company to make the change. ChatGPT was launched last November but has already seen a huge uptick in usage. Some estimates suggest that ChatGPT had attracted 100 million users by January 2023, although OpenAI has never confirmed those numbers.
The launch of ChatGPT is interesting given OpenAI’s somewhat contradictory approach to positioning its AI chatbot in the market. Despite being launched as a test, the AI chatbot has quickly gained traction with a wide range of users, from cheating on college essays to business applications. In February, OpenAI launched a premium subscription called ChatGPT Plus, which provides priority access and responses generated using the company’s latest language model, GPT-4. It costs $20/month.
Previously, the best way to access OpenAI's language models on mobile devices was to use Microsoft's Bing app, which provided access to a GPT-4-powered chatbot. An official ChatGPT app could lure some users away from Bing. Access to the chatbot is known to be Microsoft's way of luring users to Bing and Edge.
Of course, the ChatGPT app suffers from similar issues on both mobile and web, including bots' tendency to fabricate information and cause privacy fears.
