OpenAI launches free ChatGPT app for iOS.

According to Theverge , the free ChatGPT app offered by OpenAI provides chat history synchronization with the web and voice input, powered by OpenAI's open-source Whisper speech recognition model. Users can download the app from the App Store, where it works on both iPhone and iPad. OpenAI says it will offer the ChatGPT app on iOS first in the US before expanding to other countries "in the coming weeks".

After iOS, OpenAI will soon bring its AI chatbot to Android phones.

Previously, OpenAI had no plans to launch a ChatGPT mobile app, but the tool's incredible popularity prompted the company to change its mind. ChatGPT launched last November but has already gained significant traction. Some estimates suggest ChatGPT had attracted 100 million users by January 2023, although OpenAI has never confirmed these figures.

The launch of the ChatGPT app is interesting considering OpenAI's somewhat contradictory approach to positioning its AI chatbot in the market. Despite its initial beta launch, this AI chatbot quickly attracted a wide range of users, from cheating on college essays to business applications. In February, OpenAI launched a premium subscription package called ChatGPT Plus, offering priority access and responses generated using the company's latest language model, GPT-4. This package costs $20 per month.

Previously, the best way to access OpenAI's language models on mobile devices was to use Microsoft's Bing app, which provided access to a GPT-4-enabled chatbot. An official ChatGPT app could entice some users away from Bing. Access to chatbots is known to be Microsoft's way of attracting users to Bing and Edge.

Of course, the ChatGPT app also faces similar problems on both mobile and web devices, including the bot's tendency to fabricate information and causing privacy fears.
