“One Battle After Another” was expected to top this year’s Oscar nominations list after winning Best Comedy/Musical Film at the 2026 Golden Globes. However, “Sinners” (pictured) is the leading contender, with 16 nominations, becoming the most nominated film in Oscar history (surpassing “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land”—each with 14 nominations). “Sinners” combines musical, horror, and supernatural elements with a racial theme; it has a unique style compared to the art-house films usually favored by AMPAS. Despite its 16 nominations, critics predict “Sinners” is unlikely to win Best Picture. Instead, “Hamnet” and “One Battle After Another” are considered more likely to win.
The list of nominees for Best Picture also includes “Frankenstein”, “Bugonia”, “Marty Supreme”, “Sentimental Value”, “Train Dreams”, “F1”, and “The Secret Agent”. The inclusion of “F1” is quite controversial, while many other strong contenders such as “No Other Choice”, “The Testament of Ann Lee”, “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere”, and “Jay Kelly” were excluded from the competition for the Oscar.
According to critics, “One Battle After Another” is leading in the Best Director and Best Actor categories. “One Battle After Another” has 13 nominations, including important ones: Best Picture, Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. In the Best Director category, Paul Thomas Anderson has a slight advantage over Ryan Coogler of “Sinners”. However, Paul Thomas Anderson faces a formidable opponent in Chloé Zhao, director of “Hamnet” – the film that won the top award for Best Drama Film at the 2026 Golden Globes.
In the Best Actor category, Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, Ethan Hawke, and Wagner Moura are competing fiercely. Among them, Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio are considered strong contenders for the Oscar. Leonardo DiCaprio has already won an Oscar for acting, while Timothée Chalamet is a popular young actor in Hollywood. His performance in "Marty Supreme" previously earned him several Critics' Choice Awards (2026) and Golden Globe Awards (2026).
In the Best Actress category, surprisingly, popular and established names like Chase Infiniti, Jesse Plemons, Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Lopez, and Tonatiuh are absent from the nominations list. Of the five nominees – Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Renate Reinsve, and Emma Stone – only two are familiar names: Kate Hudson and Emma Stone, while the rest are relatively new faces. Emma Stone (38 years old) holds the record for being the youngest actress to receive seven Best Actress nominations in Oscar history. However, the actress predicted to make a big impact at this year's Oscars is Jessie Buckley, with her impressive performance in "Hamnet".
This year's Oscars saw the inclusion of many foreign films, notably Norway's "Sentimental Value" and Brazil's "The Secret Agent" in the Best Picture category. The Best International Film category featured several films that had previously won prestigious awards: the 2025 Cannes Palme d'Or winner "It Was Just an Accident," and the 2025 Venice Silver Lion winner "The Voice of Hind Rajab." In addition, many works from Europe, South America, and Asia appeared in important categories. Non-English language films received 22 nominations, considered a record in Oscar history. This demonstrates a shift in thinking by AMPAS, showing that the Oscars are no longer solely an American playground but are becoming more internationalized.
The 2026 Academy Awards will take place on March 15th at the Dolby Theatre in California (USA), and will be broadcast live on ABC in over 200 countries and territories.
