On April 21, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially accepted the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. This is the organization behind the Oscars.
“Generative artificial intelligence and other digital tools are used in the filmmaking process. These software do not support or hinder the ability to be nominated,” the organization said. However, they still appreciate creative work that is done largely by humans.
The Academy and its branches will judge “the extent to which people played a central role in the creative process when selecting films to award.” What matters most is the final product.
Hollywood has been using AI for a long time. For example, many filmmakers use Axle AI for facial recognition, scene detection, and scripting. Strada AI helps organize files and edit remotely. Action scenes in Alex Garland's Fall of an Empire also used DJI AI to lock focus.
AI solutions often don't directly contribute to core content, like scene imagery or voiceovers. Twelve Labs, for example, offers scene recognition, while Luma AI helps with 3D scene creation.
However, there is controversy surrounding the use of AI in cinema. The Brutalist , an epic immigration film nominated for 10 golden statues, is said to have used the technology to highlight the Hungarian accent.
Several other nominated films, including Emilia Pérez and Dune : Part Two , have also used AI software to enhance effects. Filmmakers used AI Runaway in the blockbuster Everything Everywhere All at Once .

Meanwhile, James Cameron, director of Titanic, Avatar , has joined the board of start-up Stability AI.
In 2024, Hollywood was hit by a wave of protests led by the SAG-AFTRA union, fighting for equal rights for artists' images and voices in the age of AI. A deal was signed late last year to ensure artists are paid fairly.
Powerful chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini can write a movie script. Google Imagen and MidJourney create images with a single command. In addition, tools like OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo have created realistic, cinematic clips.
According to Digitaltrends , AI-generated videos mean that one or more real artists could lose their jobs. The same goes for voice actors and dubbing.
The anti-AI backlash is still pretty fierce. Marvel was heavily criticized for using an AI-generated image in the opening of the Secret Invasion series. Meanwhile, actress Demi Moore, nominated for her role in The Substance , had to remove an image of her AI-generated dog.
“I didn't realize that sharing this image would be so disrespectful to artists and creators around the world ,” she wrote in the replacement post.
