What is PC AI?

Think of PC AI as an intelligent personal computer, designed with the right hardware and software to handle AI and machine learning tasks as a professional tool. The goal is to provide AI and machine learning tasks such as numerical processing or data filtering.

These tasks encompass a wide range of workloads, with integrated AI programs such as "stable diffusion," intelligent chatbots, comprehensive data analysis, AI model training, and running complex simulations and sophisticated AI-driven applications.

This will require a combination of CPU and GPU to deliver multitasking capabilities, along with ample RAM and fast storage options. But more importantly, AI PCs will require a new feature called NPU designed to accelerate AI tasks, enabling faster, more energy-efficient AI processing and eliminating the need to send data to cloud-based AI servers for processing. This ensures systems can operate independently of internet connectivity and enhances security by keeping data local.

What is an NPU?

An abbreviation for Neural Processing Unit, NPU is a specialized processor designed specifically to handle heavy workloads for AI tasks, which are typically assigned to GPUs. While GPUs can power large AI workloads, they can consume a significant amount of energy, which is not ideal for laptops needing battery life and inefficient for desktop computers.

Intel and AMD have both released chips with integrated NPUs.

Currently, NPUs are not ready to completely take over from GPUs; instead, it's more of a collaborative relationship where both work in parallel to reduce processing time while limiting power consumption.

But this is just the beginning, and next-generation NPUs could accelerate AI tasks on their own, allowing GPUs to focus on what they do best.

NPU Development Company

Intel and AMD are making significant inroads into the PC AI landscape, with lines like the Core Ultra or Ryzen 8000G, each featuring an NPU to handle a range of AI workloads. The result is significantly improved productivity, efficiency, and collaboration.

In fact, Apple was ahead with its M series in 2020, which featured a dedicated NPU. Apple went even further, unveiling the A11 Bionic chip in September 2017, making it the first chip with an NPU. Several Snapdragon chips also featured NPUs in 2018. While Intel and AMD weren't the first, they did truly change things.

PC AI and Windows 12

PC manufacturers are hoping that Windows 12 will create a major boost in PC AI in the future. If true, AI will be the foundation of Windows 12, and that's how Microsoft can provide Copilot with more features and bridge the gap between Windows and macOS.

Windows 12 will focus heavily on AI.

Major manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, and HP are all launching AI PC systems powered by Intel and AMD's integrated NPU processors. However, the question remains: should you buy them yet?

On the one hand, the true potential of AI PCs may not be fully clear until Windows 12 launches, which only gives us an idea of what AI might be capable of. But if you're looking to buy a new PC, choosing an AI PC seems like a smart move. It not only secures your investment for the future but also offers many benefits such as blurring the background of video calls and quickly summarizing long documents.
