After the country was reunified, Comrade Nguyen Song Thao and his unit continued to carry out the tasks assigned by the Party and the Army. From September 1977 until his sacrifice, he continuously fought on the Southwestern battlefield. As a resourceful and flexible commander, he was frequently present in difficult and fierce areas and, together with his comrades, successfully completed the assigned tasks.
In the Battle of Pa Vet (in Svay Rieng province, Cambodia) on October 24, 1977, Comrade Nguyen Song Thao commanded a company that repelled 19 attacks by an enemy battalion, killing 65 enemy soldiers, capturing 52 weapons, and holding the position. In the Battle of Prasot (on Highway 1, Xoai Rieng province) on December 17, 1977, Comrade Nguyen Song Thao commanded a battalion that penetrated 17km behind enemy lines, opened fire at the scheduled time, launched a resolute attack, killed 120 enemy soldiers, captured 11, and captured 34 weapons (including 2 105mm cannons).
Next, in the ambush of two enemy battalions at Ta Cung Bridge (Svay Rieng province) on January 3, 1978, Comrade Nguyen Song Thao calmly and bravely commanded his unit to launch a swift and powerful assault, simultaneously splitting the enemy's formation, killing 170 enemy soldiers, and capturing 75 weapons; inflicting heavy losses on two enemy battalions. During the battle, wounded in his left hand, Comrade Nguyen Song Thao bandaged and treated himself before continuing to command his unit until the battle ended.
On July 18, 1978, at the Xang Ke intersection, the 3rd Battalion (273rd Regiment), under his command, fiercely crushed the desperate resistance of the 7th Battalion, 203rd Military Region, belonging to the Pol Pot-Ieng Sary reactionary group. During the attack to capture the dike held by Pol Pot's forces, facing intense enemy fire, Lieutenant Nguyen Song Thao, Battalion Commander of the 3rd Battalion, and Political Commissar Dang Van Lua personally went to each company, encouraging officers and soldiers and organizing tenacious fighting against the enemy's attacks.
There were times when the fighting spirit of the troops diminished, seemingly on the verge of collapse, but the Battalion Command, under the leadership of Battalion Commander Nguyen Song Thao, promptly adjusted tactics, reinforced formations, and effectively carried out ideological work. However, on that day, while commanding the battle, he was hit in the hand by shrapnel. Despite heavy bleeding, he refused to leave his position, determined to fight alongside his comrades. Later, he was hit by shrapnel again and bravely sacrificed his life.

When Comrade Nguyen Song Thao was killed in action, his son, Nguyen Xuan Truong, was two years old but had never met his father. Before this battle, Comrade Nguyen Song Thao had been assigned to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff of Regiment 273. To this day, his happy smile and his promise, "I must finish this battle before I'm promoted to regiment," remain etched in the memories of his comrades who were part of Regiment 273 back then. Sadly, that heroic wish was never fulfilled!
For his exceptionally outstanding achievements in combat, Lieutenant Nguyen Song Thao was awarded the Second and Third Class Military Merit Orders. On December 20, 1979, the Party and State posthumously awarded him the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces. His remains were subsequently repatriated to Vietnam. After 48 years resting alongside his comrades at Chau Thanh Martyrs' Cemetery (Tay Ninh province), with the assistance of the government, relevant agencies, and his comrades, his remains were identified. In accordance with his family's wishes, the remains of Hero of the People's Armed Forces, Martyr Nguyen Song Thao, were brought back to his hometown, Yen Xuan commune, Nghe An province.
