"A long time ago, when I was in Brazil playing in the youth team, I was the captain. But in Vietnam, this is the first time I've been elected to the leadership committee, and I'm very happy," Xuan Son shared after being elected vice-captain of the Vietnamese national team.
Xuan Son and Hoang Duc will serve as vice-captains of the Vietnamese national team, while Quang Hai will be entrusted with the captain's armband. This information was announced by the Vietnamese national team on the morning of June 27th. The fact that a naturalized player like Xuan Son was elected to the leadership team shows the coaching staff's confidence in his professional skills and spirit.
The striker, currently playing for Nam Dinh, affirmed that being vice-captain is not stressful at all. Instead, he views the new responsibility positively: “I think everyone, not only the coach but also my family, has high expectations of me. So, I'm here to do my best and bring positive things to the Vietnamese national team. That's my job. I think everyone knows my style and what I can do for the team, so I'm here to help the team.”
Regarding the absence of center-back Do Duy Manh and striker Ngo Dang Khoa from the early days of the training camp, Xuan Son said: “I don't know too much about his injury, but I hope Manh returns soon because he is a very good player and also a close friend of mine. I send my encouragement for his speedy recovery and to help the team. As for Khoa Ngo, I think he is a good player with many qualities. I hope he will be helpful to the team. There are many quality players here, so I will try to support him.”
In addition, Xuan Son also frankly shared about his recovery process after the injury: “Honestly, I suffered a pretty serious injury. The broken leg makes it difficult for me to return to 100% form. But currently, I feel physically fit and am trying to score goals and support my teammates. I don't know what the coach needs from me, so I will do my best.”
According to the plan, the Vietnamese national team will train in Hanoi until July 1st before heading to South Korea for a training camp. After that, the team will have a friendly match against Myanmar on July 18th, before entering the ASEAN Cup 2026 with an away game against Timor-Leste on July 24th.
