Candy found to contain banned substances.

On April 18th, a representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Drug Testing stated that after receiving customer complaints, the Institute purchased several samples of Hamer-branded health supplements for testing.

Test results from 6 randomly selected Hamer lozenge products (purchased directly from a store on Hung Vuong Street, District 5, and via the Shopee e-commerce platform) showed that 4 samples contained tadalafil at a concentration of 93-270 mg per lozenge. The remaining two samples contained sildenafil citrate (18-35 mg per lozenge) and nortadalafil.

Sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil are used as medications to support and treat erectile dysfunction in men, with many different products on the market. However, these three active ingredients and their sildenafil analogues are prohibited from use in the production and sale of health supplements.

The two substances detected in the Hamer lozenge samples, sildenafil and tadalafil, should only be used under a doctor's prescription. The maximum recommended dose of tadalafil in the medication is 20 mg/day. Therefore, the amount of tadalafil detected in the Hamer lozenge samples was 5 to 15 times the maximum recommended dose.

The Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Drug Testing warns that improper use of tadalafil can cause cardiovascular complications, including myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, and even sudden death. Nortadalafil is a substance with a structure similar to tadalafil (analogues), and is currently not used as a medicine nor has its safety been evaluated.

In late 2019, the Food Safety Department of the Ministry of Health announced that seven products, which the Singaporean health authorities had warned contained banned substances and were not registered with the Department, included Hamer candy. However, this product is still being sold to this day.

On some e-commerce platforms, Hamer candy, also known as Hamer ginseng candy, is described as supporting enhanced male libido and addressing frigidity in women, overcoming frigidity and decreased desire. Additionally, this ginseng candy is said to boost the body's immunity and improve alertness at work.
