Candy found to contain banned substances

On April 18, a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Drug Testing Institute said that after receiving customer feedback, the Institute purchased a number of samples of health protection foods bearing the Hamer brand for testing.

Test results of 6 Hamer lozenges randomly purchased (directly at a store on Hung Vuong Street, District 5 and purchased via Shopee e-commerce site), 4 samples contained tadalafil with a content of 93-270 mg per tablet. The remaining 2 samples contained sildenafil citrate (18-35 mg per tablet) and nortadalafil.

Sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil are used as supportive drugs and to treat impotence in men with many different products on the market. However, these 3 drugs and similar substances (sildenafil analogues) are prohibited from use in the production and business of health protection foods.

The two substances detected in the Hamer candy samples, sildenafil and tadalafil, are only used in treatment when prescribed by a doctor. The maximum recommended dose of tadalafil in the drug is 20 mg/day. Thus, the tadalafil content detected in the Hamer candy sample above is 5 to 15 times higher than the maximum prescribed dose.

The Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Drug Control warns that improper use of tadalafil will cause cardiovascular complications for users, including myocardial infarction, angina, and even sudden death. Nortadalafil is a substance with a similar structure to tadalafil (analogues), which is not currently used as a medicine or evaluated for safety when used.

At the end of 2019, the Food Safety Department, Ministry of Health , informed that 7 types of products that Singapore health authorities issued warnings about containing banned substances, were not granted registration numbers for publication at the Department, including Hamer candy. However, this product is still sold until now.
