Kinhtedothi - During patrols and inspections in late October 2024, the Quang Son inter-communal Forest Ranger Station discovered one case of illegal deforestation in sub-area 1679, managed by the Quang Son Commune People's Committee, Dak Glong District.
About 5 km from the residential area is the site of the deforested land. Roads have been cleared to facilitate transportation, allowing vehicles to reach the site. Some areas adjacent to the site have been prepared with raised beds and terraces for planting industrial crops.

At the scene, according to the reporter's observations, the felled trees still had green leaves and fresh trunks; the felled bamboo trees had wilting leaves, turning dark brown, although some leaves were still green. This indicates that the incident occurred recently.

Accordingly, a relatively large area of forest has been destroyed, totaling 1,988 hectares. This area is located in plots 21, 28, and 29, section 8, sub-area 1679, with 100% damage. According to the map attached to Decision No. 361/QD-UBND dated January 30, 2024, of the People's Committee of Dak Glong District, regarding the approval of forest change data and land planning for forest development in Dak Glong District up to December 31, 2023, this area is designated as production forest, currently classified as poor evergreen forest.

In discussions with the Dak Glong - Gia Nghia Inter-district Forest Management Unit, it was learned that the perpetrators have not yet been identified. Considering the incident shows signs of criminal activity, on October 26, 2024, the Dak Glong - Gia Nghia Inter-district Forest Management Unit invited the Criminal Investigation Agency - Dak Glong District Police, the Dak Glong District People's Procuracy, the Dak Glong District Land Registration Office Branch, and the Quang Son Commune People's Committee to conduct a site inspection of the deforested area.

Regarding the illegal deforestation incident, the Dak Glong - Gia Nghia Inter-district Forest Management Unit requests the Dak Glong District People's Committee to review, investigate, and handle the responsibilities of the Chairman of the Quang Son Commune People's Committee and the Quang Son Commune Forestry Board. At the same time, the Dak Glong - Gia Nghia Inter-district Forest Management Unit will conduct a review and handle the responsibilities of the forest rangers in charge of the area (forests managed by the Commune People's Committee) according to regulations.
Regarding this incident, in an interview with a reporter, Mr. Le Dinh Tuan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Son commune, stated that the local government accepts responsibility for the illegal deforestation in lots 21, 28, and 29, section 8, sub-area 1679, which is under the management of the Quang Son commune People's Committee. However, the incident occurred partly due to the fact that Quang Son commune is located 56 km from the center of Dak Glong district and is one of the communes with the largest natural area, forest area, and forestry land in Dak Nong province.
Mr. Tuan further explained, "Due to the scattered nature of the forests, interspersed with areas of land that have been encroached upon for many years for planting industrial crops and other purposes, managing, protecting, and developing the forests is very difficult. Furthermore, unplanned migration continues to the area, and the sharp increase in prices of many key agricultural products puts a lot of pressure on the locality."

Currently, the People's Committee of Quang Son commune is requesting that relevant authorities clarify the responsibilities of each collective and individual involved in the deforestation and will handle the matter according to the law.
It is known that the People's Committee of Quang Son commune is also a forest management unit with a total area of forest and forestry land under its management and protection of over 4,300 hectares. Of this, about 1,100 hectares are natural and planted forests. The remainder mainly consists of land that has been encroached upon or converted to agricultural land.
