Increase income
Truong Thanh commune has a total natural land area of 5,908.34 hectares, of which agricultural land accounts for over 5,144 hectares. The commune has approximately 2,200 hectares of orchards, with 1,800 hectares of orchards already producing fruit. Durian is the fruit crop with the largest area in the commune, covering over 1,678 hectares, of which over 895 hectares are already bearing fruit, yielding more than 16,000 tons per year. Many durian orchards help farmers earn profits of 350-550 million VND per year. The durian varieties grown in the commune include Ri 6, accounting for 70%, with the remainder being other varieties such as Monthong, Musang King, and bitter gourd...
Mr. Phan Thanh Trong, residing in Thuan My hamlet, Truong Thanh commune, said: "My family owns more than 20 acres of land planted with Ri 6 and Monthong durians, of which about 50% is planted with durian trees that yield four harvests per year. Durian can achieve a yield of over 2 tons per acre, with a selling price of 45,000-55,000 VND/kg. Thanks to this, my family's income is many times higher than what we earned from growing rice before. It is estimated that each acre of durian trees brings farmers a profit of over 50 million VND per year."

According to Mr. Phan Van Thang, Director of Truong Thanh A Cooperative in Truong Thanh commune, durian cultivation has helped increase income and improve the living standards and economic conditions of many households in the commune. Thanks to durian farming, many families have become wealthy. However, durian farmers must diligently grasp techniques to properly care for their orchards and strengthen cooperation to establish registered cultivation areas. At the same time, they must produce according to advanced technical processes and apply good agricultural practices to ensure the quality and safety of their products for export. Truong Thanh A Cooperative currently has 30 members, cultivating over 22 hectares of durian, of which 21 hectares have registered cultivation areas.
Supporting farmers in developing production.
To maximize the effectiveness of durian orchards, the Truong Thanh commune government has implemented various support activities for farmers in production and product consumption. These include guiding farmers to actively apply advanced techniques in production and strengthening value chain linkages to improve production efficiency and stabilize product output. The goal is to leverage the potential and strengths of durian production towards green, clean, and sustainable practices to bring high value to farmers.
Truong Thanh commune also collaborates with city authorities and relevant units to organize workshops and technical training courses, and conferences connecting supply and demand for products, creating conditions to promote linkages between farmers and consuming businesses. It actively supports and encourages farmers to strengthen their links with each other to establish cooperatives and durian farming groups, forming concentrated growing areas to facilitate connections with export businesses. At the same time, it actively invites businesses inside and outside Can Tho City to link production and consumption of products for cooperatives and durian-growing households in the commune. As a result, the commune has gradually formed and developed production and consumption chains for durian fruit.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Bi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Truong Thanh commune, the commune's functional departments not only focus on guiding farmers on durian cultivation and care techniques, but also support the establishment of planting area codes, helping farmers strengthen linkages in production and product consumption. The commune's functional departments also focus on training and guiding farmers in applying scientific and technical advancements, enhancing market information, and ensuring product quality and safety requirements to meet export demands. They also support farmers in overcoming limitations in production and product consumption linkages to ensure the sustainable development of the local durian growing area.
To date, Truong Thanh commune has 5 cooperatives specializing in durian cultivation, covering an area of over 162 hectares with 138 participating households. Notably, the Tan Trung Thanh Cooperative in Truong Trung hamlet, with 75 households cultivating 78.9 hectares of durian, has had a stable guaranteed purchase contract with Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Co., Ltd. for many years. With the active support of the commune and the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, along with the participation and linkage of many businesses and cooperatives, Truong Thanh commune has been granted 26 planting area codes for durian and other fruit trees, totaling over 422 hectares with 417 participating households.
Through the connections facilitated by the Truong Thanh commune government, many cooperatives and durian-growing households in Truong Thanh have recently connected with businesses to expand and develop durian growing areas with designated growing zone codes for export purposes. Specifically, Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Co., Ltd., Van Loc An Sinh Joint Stock Company, and Gia Phu Fruit Co., Ltd. have signed memoranda of understanding with cooperatives and hamlets in Truong Thanh commune to establish designated durian growing zones for export, covering a total area of approximately 1,200 hectares.
