For the past 90 years, the Vietnamese People's Militia has lived and fought among the people, receiving their love and support. Inheriting and developing the patriotic spirit and military art of the Vietnamese nation, they have overcome countless hardships and challenges, and together with other forces and the people, have achieved great victories in the struggle for national liberation, the defense of the Fatherland, and the fulfillment of glorious international obligations. Throughout the revolutionary periods, over 370 collectives and 284 individuals have been awarded the title of "Hero of the People's Armed Forces" by the Party and the State. In 2015, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of its founding, the Vietnamese People's Militia was awarded the Gold Star Order by the President of Vietnam.
The immense contributions and glorious achievements of the Vietnamese militia have played a significant role in the national liberation struggle in the past, as well as in the building and protection of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam today, as affirmed by President Ho Chi Minh : “The militia, self-defense forces, and guerrillas are the forces of the entire nation, an invincible force, an iron wall of the Fatherland. No matter how ferocious the enemy, if they touch that force, that wall, they will all be annihilated.” The history of the nation's struggle for national liberation and defense shows that the emergence and development of the militia is a universal law in maintaining the country's military and national defense strength; it is the art of organizing armed forces, and a continuation of the nation's strategy for defending the country.
A typical example is the process of building the militia force in Phu Tan district, where over 96% of the population are religious. Since joining the militia force in Phu An commune, soldier Truong Quang Minh has consistently performed well in training and patrol duties as assigned. Thanks to his excellent efforts and outstanding achievements, in 2024, he was admitted into the Party. Soldier Le Tan (Military Command of Phu My town) was also admitted to the Party after a series of active and exemplary leading roles in all local activities. Lieutenant Colonel Hoang Quoc Thao ( Political Commissar of the Phu Tan District Military Command) stated: “Clearly recognizing the role of the militia force, in recent times, from the district level to the grassroots units, the recruitment of militia members has been carried out effectively according to regulations. Localities have focused on building a force with a rational organizational structure, ensuring sufficient representation of various branches of service, suitable for each locality, in the direction of being “strong, comprehensive, and widespread”. In particular, Party development work has consistently achieved good results, with the percentage of Party members increasing year after year. As a result, the fighting capacity of the Party committees and branches has continuously improved, contributing to the successful completion of military and national defense tasks at the grassroots level.”
In An Giang, the percentage of Party members in the militia force currently reaches 25.5%; 100% of communes, wards, and towns have Party branches and military youth branches; and 100% of Party branches have Party committees. The militia force in general, and the cadres of the commune-level military command in particular, have received systematic training; over 90 cadres have been appointed or promoted to higher leadership positions in the grassroots political system. Huynh Van Hoang, Secretary of the Hoa Lac Commune Party Committee, shared: “After participating in the militia force for a while, I was sent to university to study basic military science. Thanks to applying the knowledge I gained and the trust of the local Party committee and government, I was assigned to a higher position.”
The provincial militia force, along with the provincial armed forces, has contributed significantly to the construction and development of the homeland. This is achieved through effective coordination with functional forces in patrolling and protecting the safety of national defense facilities and key areas, safeguarding national holidays, important political events, and local festivals; and effectively handling hotspots involving large gatherings, disputes, and complaints. In particular, they are the core force in rescue operations, flood and storm prevention, disaster relief, disease control, fire prevention and control, forest fire prevention, assisting the people, implementing military rear-area policies, and participating in revolutionary action movements at the local and grassroots levels. They are highly valued by the Party committees and government, and increasingly trusted and loved by the people.
Building a strong and widespread militia force is a strategic and important policy, both urgent and fundamental in the long term, requiring the involvement and responsibility of the entire political system and the whole population, under the leadership of the Party, contributing to enhancing the strength of the armed forces and firmly protecting the Fatherland in all situations. According to the Provincial Military Command, the 90th anniversary of the Militia Force's Traditional Day awakens national pride and self-respect, promotes revolutionary heroism, enhances patriotism and love for socialism, fosters self-reliance and self-improvement, overcomes all difficulties and challenges; and strives to build a strong national defense system and a national defense posture linked to a solid people's security posture.
