Currently, it is the rainy season, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks in livestock, so disease prevention measures need to be implemented comprehensively and effectively.

Following the merger, northern Dong Nai became a key livestock farming area of the city. Although many localities still face difficulties, they remain determined to implement comprehensive solutions for disease prevention and control, contributing to ensuring safe and sustainable livestock development.

Large livestock farming area, high risk of disease outbreak.

As of June 12, 2026, the entire city recorded 40 outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF), resulting in the culling of over 13,500 pigs. Although the northern part of Dong Nai province has a large livestock population, ASF outbreaks mainly occur in small-scale farms, causing relatively low losses.

Specifically, since the beginning of the year, the northern region has detected 13 outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in 25 livestock farms across 9 out of 18 communes and wards, with a total of over 2,200 pigs culled. However, the risk of disease outbreaks in this area remains very high, and local authorities are focusing on disease prevention and control, especially ASF.

Mr. Ta Hoang Dung, Head of the Economic Department of Loc Hung Commune, said: The first African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in the commune occurred in July 2025. To date, the commune has had 7 outbreaks, resulting in the culling of 142 pigs. In disease prevention, the commune has coordinated with the Livestock and Fisheries Station of Region 9 to announce, handle, and implement disease prevention and control measures. The locality has also carried out a month-long general sanitation, disinfection, and environmental decontamination campaign. Disease prevention and control work is ensured, and no hotspots have emerged. The commune hopes to receive guidance to promptly support livestock farmers who have suffered losses due to the disease.

An Loc Ward has a large livestock population with nearly 17,500 pigs and over 633,400 poultry, mainly small-scale farming. Mr. Ha Quoc Hung, Head of the Urban Infrastructure and Economic Department of An Loc Ward, said: To date, the first phase of vaccination for livestock and poultry in 2026 has achieved 100% of the allocated vaccine doses. However, disease prevention and control remains challenging because some residents do not fully understand and are unaware of their role and responsibility in disease prevention and control. Large-scale livestock farms are doing a good job of disease prevention and control. But small-scale farmers, especially those with only a few dozen pigs, do not prioritize disease prevention and control; when pigs die from disease, farmers put them in sacks and throw them into the environment, creating a risk of disease outbreaks. The ward has organized teams to bury the dead pigs and also deployed personnel to monitor this situation.

Synchronizing solutions to combat the epidemic.

The northern part of the city has a large livestock population, so local authorities pay close attention to implementing disease prevention and control measures for livestock. Accordingly, the localities implement a comprehensive set of solutions such as: carrying out general sanitation, disinfection, and environmental decontamination; vaccinating livestock; and conducting proactive and reactive sampling for surveillance according to plan to detect and control the spread of disease.

Representatives from the Livestock and Fisheries Station of Region 8 commented: In the past, coordination between the City's Livestock and Fisheries Sub-Department and local authorities through the Steering Committee for Disease Prevention and Control has been good, ensuring quick and timely guidance for local implementation. However, practical implementation still faces many difficulties due to the limited number of veterinary staff in communes and wards, the heavy workload, the large geographical area, and the specific characteristics of the northern region, especially with large-scale livestock farming. Some transit and collection points for pigs from other areas also pose a risk of disease outbreaks. However, to date, the disease situation remains well controlled. Vaccination efforts are relatively well-maintained. We hope that local authorities will be more decisive in their disease prevention and control efforts for livestock.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Pham The Huan, Head of the Livestock and Fisheries Station in Region 9, said: In the local disease prevention and control work, the stations have provided timely support, especially when outbreaks occur. The stations proactively coordinate and support localities in handling outbreaks as well as implementing vaccination programs. However, due to many objective and subjective reasons, the vaccination of livestock in the first six months of 2026 in some communes and wards has been slow. In the coming time, it is requested that communes actively implement and ensure human resources in organizing vaccination according to the plan, and the unit ensures the supply of vaccines.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Nai City, Nguyen Van Thang, emphasized: There must be no shortage of vaccines supplied to localities for disease prevention and control. For localities experiencing outbreaks, stations need to coordinate effectively and report immediately to the department for timely support in implementing disease prevention and control measures. In emergency situations where vaccines from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries have not arrived in time, localities need to mobilize human resources and supplies from private veterinary facilities to promptly prevent and control the disease.

According to Nguyen Van Thang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Nai City, the goal for June is to control African Swine Fever (ASF). To achieve this, localities must decisively and comprehensively implement disease prevention and control measures; strengthen propaganda efforts to raise public awareness of disease prevention and control, especially focusing on achieving both the quantity and quality of vaccinations.
