Nam Tra My District (Quang Nam Province) is not only a mountainous area with rich tourism potential, but also a land famous for its precious ginseng (Ngoc Linh ginseng). This is a precious resource with great economic , medical, and cultural value, and sustainable exploitation is essential.
Awakening tourism potential
Located at the foot of Ngoc Linh mountain, Nam Tra My district has a tropical monsoon climate, suitable for the development of diverse plants and rare creatures. With high mountainous terrain, the valley is divided by many rivers, streams, rapids and waterfalls, creating a unique and wild natural landscape. This place also has a diverse and rich system of primary forests in terms of flora and fauna, including: Nuoc La Reserve, Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve, Ngoc Linh forest ecosystem. Currently, the whole Nam Tra My district has more than 1,500 households registered to grow Ngoc Linh ginseng with more than 1,650 hectares. Ngoc Linh ginseng has now become the main crop to enrich ethnic minorities, helping to change the lives of people here significantly.
For a long time, many ethnic groups have lived together in this land. The community's solidarity in struggles, activities, festivals and beliefs has created cultural values that are both rich, unique and distinctive, bearing the mark of the land and people of Ngoc Linh ginseng. Activities such as ginseng festivals; ginseng markets; new rice festivals, water trough worship, mountain god worship; gong festivals... of ethnic groups in Nam Tra My district have formed a land with a multi-ethnic culture. This is considered one of the great potentials for tourism development, attracting tourists to study, visit and learn about the revolutionary traditions and traditional cultural identities of ethnic groups in the district.
According to Vice Chairman of Nam Tra My District People's Committee Nguyen The Phuoc, with its inherent tourism potential, in recent times, Nam Tra My District has directed sectors and localities to research, build and recreate the rituals and ceremonies of ethnic minorities into tourism products. Organize many activities to preserve and promote the local ethnic cultural identity associated with cultural activities, entertainment, introducing products, souvenirs, culinary dishes, and specialties of the district to promote, attract and serve tourists.
Currently, in Nam Tra My district, tourist attractions associated with historical, cultural and ecological relics have gradually been formed. With the historical-cultural exploration tour, the biggest highlight is the National Base of the Inter-Zone Party Committee and Military Zone V, and the Western Executive Committee Relic. With eco-tourism and community tourism, visitors can visit the 5-Tan Waterfall, Doi Stream, Tak Chuom Cultural Village, Hot Springs, Cheng Tong Cultural Village and Tak Ngo Ginseng Garden...
However, to exploit and develop tourism in a sustainable manner, localities must continue to preserve and promote the cultural identity of ethnic groups to build tourism products with specific characteristics, suitable for each locality in a oriented, planned and selective manner to increase attractiveness to tourists. Districts and localities need to build a more effective overall tourism development strategy; there need to be specific policies and mechanisms to attract investment to develop this unique type of tourism.
“Nam Tra My District identifies one of the key factors for sustainable tourism development as protecting and promoting natural and cultural resources. Tourism not only helps improve people's lives but also ensures the preservation of environmental and social values. The district applies a tourism development strategy with community participation, helping people directly benefit from tourism development and creating positive impacts on the environment and society,” said Mr. Nguyen The Phuoc.
Take advantage of natural resources
Since 2017, when Ngoc Linh ginseng was identified by the Government as a national product, Quang Nam province has encouraged and supported ginseng growers. Up to now, the planned area for conservation and
Ngoc Linh ginseng development has been identified as more than 15,000 hectares (of which from an altitude of 2,000m and above there are more than 2,200 hectares, at an altitude of 1,200-2,000m there are more than 13,300 hectares) mainly concentrated in Nam Tra My district. The highland region of Nam Tra My is known as the capital of Ngoc Linh ginseng.
In order to improve the quality of tourism development associated with Ngoc Linh ginseng, Nam Tra My district has concretized the Resolutions of the District Party Committee into practical and effective projects. Recently, the district has also completed the dossier to submit to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for recognition of national intangible cultural heritage for folk knowledge on planting, processing and developing Ngoc Linh ginseng.
On November 18, 2024, the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee issued a Resolution on strengthening the management, conservation and development of Ngoc Linh ginseng in the province until 2030, with a vision to 2035. In particular, focusing on investing in essential infrastructure, framework infrastructure, developing types of eco-tourism, resorts, and community tourism in Ngoc Linh ginseng areas. Investing in building a community tourism village, developing infrastructure for tourism, organizing fairs, Ngoc Linh ginseng festivals... to promote and advertise the image of Ngoc Linh ginseng to people at home and abroad. Attracting at least 5 businesses to invest in developing ginseng tourism associated with eco-tourism and resorts. Creating tourist routes connecting localities from urban areas, plains to Ngoc Linh ginseng growing and processing areas to develop tourism and promote the image of ginseng growing areas. Organize tourism programs connecting with ginseng growing and processing areas and developing the national intangible cultural heritage of Ngoc Linh ginseng.
Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Nam Province Ho Quang Buu said that ginseng tourism in Nam Tra My District can be said to be a new tourist destination. In the world, there are four countries that have developed ginseng tourism very well, such as: Korea, the US, Canada and Russia. Vietnam alone has one of the most precious ginsengs in the world, but currently the ginseng tourism industry has not developed strongly. If Nam Tra My District in particular and Quang Nam Province in general can take advantage of the strengths of Ngoc Linh ginseng natural resources, the ginseng tourism industry will develop brilliantly in the near future.
“I hope that with the efforts of ginseng growers, those working in tourism and efforts to protect the environment and nature, in the near future, ginseng tourism will develop.
