Developing the night-time economy to its full potential.

The Nighttime Economy Development Plan, issued by the City People's Committee in 2020, serves as the basis for departments, agencies, and localities to focus on implementing various solutions to promote the nighttime economy. To date, many new and attractive nighttime products and services have emerged, contributing to the promotion of local tourism.

According to the Department of Tourism , the project has solved the problem of where tourists can go and what they can experience in Da Nang at night; in particular, many night-time tourism products and services have created diversity, uniqueness, and distinctiveness, which are highly appreciated by locals and tourists, helping to increase the length of stay of visitors and increase revenue.

“From the project, many night-time tourism products have been developed, such as the pilot model of My An night beach, An Thuong tourist street, Bach Dang pedestrian street, night-time tourism services at the park on the east bank at the foot of Nguyen Van Troi bridge and Nguyen Van Troi pedestrian bridge, night markets, art shows; Han River night cruise tours; water music show at September 2nd Square; and the Dragon Bridge fire and water show. At the same time, night-time experiences, events, and festivals at tourist areas and high-end resorts and hotels such as Da Nang Downtown Complex, Sunworld Ba Na Hills (Ba Na By Night), Mikazuki…, and vibrant and attractive night-time activities along both banks of the Han River and along the coastline have emerged.”

Services, entertainment venues, restaurants , health and beauty care, specialized night food streets like Pham Hong Thai, Le Thanh Nghi, Vo Nguyen Giap, shopping malls… create brands and destinations for tourists. The city also organizes large-scale and unique night-time cultural and tourism events and festivals such as the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival, the Enjoy Da Nang Festival, the opening program for the beach tourism season…”, shared Ms. Truong Thi Hong Hanh, Director of the Department of Tourism.

However, the development of the night-time economy to serve tourists has not yet reached the level commensurate with the city's tourism potential. According to the Department of Tourism, the development of the night-time economy in Da Nang still faces several challenges, such as the lack of a policy framework to manage and encourage its development; the incomplete completion of some key projects that would drive the development of the night-time economy; and the presence of service areas for the night-time economy interspersed within residential areas.

To address this issue, the city continues to implement solutions to promote the development of nighttime tourism products. These include planning to identify areas for nighttime economic development in the tourism sector; continuing to effectively operate existing nighttime tourism products, while investing in upgrading pedestrian streets, night markets, and food streets; nighttime tourism services on Nguyen Van Troi Bridge and the park on the east bank at the foot of Nguyen Van Troi Bridge; and organizing large-scale, unique events and festivals at night, with highlights such as the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival and events and festivals on both banks of the Han River.

The Department of Tourism is researching and organizing new nighttime sightseeing programs with distinctive and attractive cultural values; encouraging tourist destinations to innovate and organize unique nighttime products and services… The Department of Tourism, along with relevant departments and agencies, is actively supporting businesses and investors to accelerate the investment progress of projects creating entertainment tourism products, large-scale and high-class theme parks serving both day and night; and investing in the formation of free trade zones with high-end commercial and service activities. Local authorities are actively coordinating with relevant departments and agencies to promote nighttime economic development projects in their areas.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoa, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ngu Hanh Son District, the City People's Committee has just approved the investment plan for the An Thuong Tourist Street project (phase 2) with an investment of over 100 billion VND. Phase 2 of the project, in addition to renovating sidewalks and greenery along Chau Thi Vinh Te, Hoang Ke Viem, Ngo Thi Si, and Mai Thuc Lan streets; expanding some roads, installing streetlights and decorative lighting, will include a central square with a musical fountain in the An Thuong Tourist Street area.

“The first phase of the An Thuong Tourist Street project, after becoming operational, has created a unique and attractive tourism product, especially for international tourists who have stayed here in considerable numbers. Phase 2 of the project expands the space and upgrades the technical infrastructure on several connecting roads to synchronize with phase 1. Once completed, this area will host cultural activities, entertainment, and shopping day and night for tourists in the area,” Mr. Hoa said.

Similarly, the development of the night-time economy to serve tourism in Hai Chau district is given special attention. Mr. Truong Thanh Dung, Vice Chairman of the Hai Chau District People's Committee, said that the district plans to expand the Bach Dang pedestrian street to the south, extending to Asia Park; and establish a night market on Tran Van Tru street. At the same time, the district will develop the night-time economy (food and beverage services, shopping, etc.) on Le Hong Phong, Thai Phien, Tran Quoc Toan, and Hoang Van Thu streets; with a ban on vehicles in the evening on Le Hong Phong street.

“The Bach Dang pedestrian street has now created a space for relaxation, recreation, and entertainment with a series of cultural and artistic events taking place here. Food and beverage services are just an accompanying service for residents and tourists. With the formation of streets specializing in food and shopping services in the near future, we expect to boost the development of the night economy in the area, creating a vibrant atmosphere for the city at night and helping to attract more tourists,” Mr. Dung informed.
